My grandfather (Steadman Aldis) came to the United States from England about 1890. The story I have heard is that the name "Aldis" was applied to French-speaking immigrants living in an "Old House" in Colchester during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.
Is there any truth to that story? If so, where can I find some information about that Old House.
