It's All Welsh to Me

From a website featuring Ordnance Survey maps about Wales, you'll find in these two short centres references to the size of mapping sheets in inches, to viewing them at so many pixcels per inch, and the number of miles and yards over certain distances - and not an S.I. unit anywhere to be seen...see if you can find the Welsh Imperial words below:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Maint pob un ddalen yw 18 modfedd x 12 modfedd (hynny yw, 3 milltir x dwy filltir). Sganiwyd hwy ar gydraniad o 150 picsel/modfedd ac maent wedi'u cadw fel GIF dau-lliw. Felly 100 picsel ar eich sgrîn yw tua 200 llath ar y dir".

See what I have to put up with while learning the language:

3(tri) milltir x dwy filltir

miles = milltir, only in certain circumstances its spelled "filltir" depending on usage.

Even the word "wales" gets changed depending on placement or circumstance:

Cymru (pronounced: cumm-ree)
Gymru (pronounced: gumm-ree)
nghymru (I'd have to phone you on this one)

Berenger - where does "sasanacht" come from in Scotland? What does it mean?

I only ask because 'english' is "sasnaig" (no time to spell check!) which is pronounced "sassenieg" - ie very similar.

The word 'sassenach' is a corruption of the Scots Gaelic for 'Lowlander', which, technically speaking, includes everyone from Strathclyde and Midlothian.

Hmmm, ok - so nothing to do with my little theory-ette then.

Yeah. Close enough. But remember the use of Gaelic on the south-western seaboard - Kintyre, Inner Hebridies etc - technically Strathcylde but not "Highland" Scotland.
