Why of all European languages German?

Because there is more technical literature in German than any other European language except English. Germans have historically been much more successful in science and engineering than most other European peoples.

This was supposed to be a response to the "Too Much Harsh Reality?" thread. I could have sworn I hit reply, but maybe not. Sorry about that.

Thanks for the explanation, but it may not go down too well with some on this board?

Note that I said "historically." The situation is fast changing.
And of course, this is only a generalization.

I did not think this would deter rabid nationalists?

Tough luck to the rabid nationalists.

I thought that nationalism in Germany was still sort of "outlawed".

Although I have read in the news that some chap has won an important election there and his views are sympathetic to nationalism.

Most Germans, however, are still embarrased at their nationalist past.

What this has to do with these boards is beyond me though.

In my view the Nazis weren't true nationalists, anyway- they hated nation states (or so it seems to me). There believed in a hegemeny in the world, which nationalists generally do not. I'ld suggest that any nationalist view which believes all nations should be subverted and destroyed or used to serve a greater nation, well, are not nationalistic at all.
