Walk a Country Mile

Infieldfly,

Regarding your question of January 4th @ 6:14 p.m.

''Why is the strange irish mile used? It's shown as 6720'.''

Infieldfly, you don't say why you think it's strange.

Firstly, the irish ml. is not a strange mile. Of all the world's long distance measures, the irish ml. is by far the easiest to use. Why don't you try it out for yourself, compare it to the stt.ml. of 5280', or any other long distance measure, and let me know what you think.

Secondly, the irish ml. is a strange mile, because it drops outside the goal posts of 5000' & 6080'. Folks sometimes mention that this is a mistake, and that the irish ml. is supposed to be 5040', being originally based on the ulstan flax span, which then got interpreted as the foot. But I can't recall anyone backing up this speculation with examples. Instead, there are a numerous locations in Erse Free State & England that show that the irish ml. has always been 6720'.
