Vertitas man promises cash give-away
By Local London Reporter

VERITAS' Harlow general election candidate Tony Bennett has pledged to donate half his salary to charity if elected as Harlow MP.

The solicitor said he would only draw £29,597 from a £59,095 salary and give the rest to local organisations.

He added: "Since 1973, when MPs began giving away their powers to the European Union, they have consistently voted themselves more salary, higher pensions and numerous allowances.

"Most of them draw a combined salary and research allowance of around £160,000 a year."

In 2001 Mr Bennett polled three per cent of the vote for the UK Independence Party. If elected he has vowed to stop mass immigration and work towards a zero tolerance of crime.

He said Britain would save £40 billion by withdrawing from the European Union and the party would also make savings by "cutting out waste and red tape".

30 grand to charity will only compensate for a miniscule amount of the damage done by electing a right-wing extremist.

Not for alcohol

April 27 2005, 4:55 PM

The momey will go to local and national charities which assist in the following fields: physical and mental disability, relief of poverty, tackling ill-health, overseas aid.

Far from spending money on alcohol, it is more likley that I will financially support a charity that aims to reduce alcohol consumption in our society.

All monies paid out - to registrered charities only - will be documented and receipted

Tony Bennett

There is no way Tony would ever become elected. The people in power chose the puppet the people think they voted for. Voter fraud is a alive and well in today's politics.

If by some chance Tony's party would win, guaranteed he and his cohorts would be assassinated at first light. Tony is playing with fire and is going to get burned very badly.

Sadly, I have to agree with Erin. I can find no other explanation for the caliber of candidates we see over in the US, and I have no reason to believe the UK would be any different.

Of course, there is one other explanation – the stupid people grossly outnumber the smart people (one of the great potential drawbacks of a democratic system).

That being said, I wish Tony the best of luck.

What a coincidence. I use that bathroom too.
Let's shake.

Tony

A very altruistic promise (with very little chance of the voters actually putting Tony in a position to honour it)

Do you make the same promise regarding your current salary as an EC researcher for Robert Kilroy-Silk (or whatever your current job title is)

You often suggest that vast amounts of EC money is wasted. I might suggest that axing two salaries would be a start.

Four times worse than 1973

REPLY: No. Being employed by an M.E.P. is not a public office to which one is elected.

Since 1973, MPs have given away half of their powers whilst doubling their salaries in real terms, not to mention quadrupling their research and secretarial allowances. Time they were replaced by those who would halve their salaries and double their powers

Tony

For a change, I'm nearly in total agreement with you. I would certainly agree with halving MSP's salaries/allowances & (more importantly) doubling their powers!

:-)
