To ErrorNoBrains - don't forget to hit "Post".
Writing a massive diatribe of nonsense and then hitting that "X" in the topright might well be a relief for us, but its a total waste of your valuable time.
Imagine how many records you could measure in that time, whole ones and those smashed up by your mallet.

<<Apparently spaceships use milometers.>>
And what would you call it if it measured kilometers?
I wasn't aware this word was in common use in the UK.
We call them odometers in the US. Conveniently, that
applies equally well to English or metric.

Only because the medication Steve is on has the effect of making everything metric appear as FFU.

Am I to understand that BBC has revived Doctor Who? If this is the case, how are the new episodes? I haven't seen Doctor Who on the television in more than ten years.

Get the vids if you can. I gave up on the programme in the 80's, but the new episodes have a very, very sly sense of humour.
Much as I hate to admit this when Steve is watching, but BBC Wales have done a great job!
Re: Dr Who
June 2 2005, 5:44 PM
Hey! Watch it you! :-D
Yes the new Dr Who is very very good - its like it should be - like in the days of Tom Baker!
The humour is brill and they haven't "hollywoodized" it.
See if its on BBC America, Niles....

"like in the days of Tom Baker"
Jon Pertwee was better!!!
(I think from this we can assume that I'm slightly older than Steve!)
Re: Dr Who
June 2 2005, 9:56 PM
I thought you preferred Mr Troughton! ;-) ;-)
Actually - I was "on the cusp" so to speak. I seem to remember the generation of Tom Baker from Jon Pertwee. Its all a bit hazy though, I think I was at that "visual absorbing" time in my life (ie too young to think about it but old enough to realise that 20ft spiders make it a requirement to hide behind the nearest sofa).
With the parents.
Maybe we can all agree that Silvester McCoy was an absolute cr*p doctor! To me he killed off Dr Who (at that time, obviously).

Thanks Steve! At least you didn't suggest that I could remember William Hartnell from 1st time around!
I agree re the Silvester McCoy point - definitely one of Scotland's poorer exports! That's about the time I gave up on the programme.
Sad admission time - who else has been to the Doctor Who exhibition on Blackpool seafront (I was 12!!!!)? Is it still there?

I'm amazed at the reaction to this series with the words "Dr Who" as its title. It has nothing to do with Dr Who.

There are quite a few mentions to the good doctor in this thread.
So, BWMA, which is/was your favourite Doctor?

I'll happily watch anything pre-McCoy. This new series is a disaster; they're making a completely different programme and using the Dr Who brand name to sell it. What a rip off.

[gulp] SHAME ON YOU.
I'm really into the currenct series!
In fact I type this knowing that it'll be on in just over 50mins!
I guess its a case of "each to their own" - at least they haven't tried to metricate this Doctor!

This night's episode referred to the bracelets having a range of ten feet. That was good. Otherwise, the episode was complete tosh.
And next week, we have ... Dr Who and the Daleks meets Big Brother and Weakest Link.
Guess that runs with the rest of the series:
Dr Who meets Eastenders
Dr Who meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Dr Who meets Hollyoaks
What this series has not produced is simply a programme called ... Dr Who. I don't think they have the slightest interest in bringing Dr Who back. After three previous botched resurrections, this series really is the end.
I give up.

From an OLD US tv series, the Lone Ranger.
As he rides off into the sunset, he yells "Hi-Yo, Silver, Away" to his horse, Silver.
Link has more info on original actor who played the character

I'm impressed, Steve. That was an astonishingly accurate visual representation of the music you are thinking of.
Tom Baker was always my favorite. Followed in a close second by Jon Pertwee.

I think that (adopts US accent) "ya'll american posters" will be happy to hear that the theme music is much more like the original music rather than that electronic sound that came in with Peter Davidson.
Except it has a more 'military' sound to it.
Couldn't find it on the web so you'll have to do with this instead:
Sorry to disappoint U.S. posters, but this new series is not Dr Who is any recognisable way. It still has humour, but the jokes are of a toliet/innuendo nature. There are no stories as such, just a collection of scenes that serve as a backdrop to some well-written character exchanges (the old series had both). About 20% of the programme is boy/girlfriend soap. It lacks the wit of the original. The Doctor is almost a secondary character.

Dr Who - Feet

re (BWMA): "This night's episode referred to the bracelets having a range of ten feet. That was good. Otherwise, the episode was complete tosh".
REPLY: The quote was, I think: "If it moves more than ten feet away, then it gets zapped".
Another quote from the same programme was: "The waves were 100 foot taller than me".
P.S. I rely on sources to provide me with this information as I don't have a TV and therefore don't watch the current series.
But when I think of UKMA and then recall the Daleks from the 1960s version of Dr Who, I am reminded of that tinny, electronic, inhuman sound: "Exterminate...exterminate...". The Daleks were all a uniform 6 foot high, as I recall...

Oliver:

Oh yes, Parky is a great character.
Parkinson has done a good job, but I think it is time someone else should take over this role.
Perhaps Kilroy-Silk could come back to TV, he would make an interesting Parky.
