Two inches thick in The NetherlandsJune 1 2005 at 7:21 PM | Tony Bennett |
| - As the Dutch prepeare to kick to death the European Constitution already mortally wounded by the French, one Dutchman seems to have reverted to customary measures already, judging by this comment on the BBCi website today:
"We in Holland are neither accepting nor rejecting the E.U. constitution. What we are doing is asking for clarification. We have never been informed or consulted in all these years regarding the E.U., at all. Now the government has proposed a 2-inch thick constitution and given the Dutch citizens a 3-page pamphlet explaining the whys and why nots. We in Holland have been ill-informed and mis-informed for two decades and the result is that we now have a monster in Brussels (or is it Strasbourg?). I urge the British to debate more and demand more before they decide".

The BBC is saying voters rejected it, 62%. I assume they are calling the elction based on exit polls as it seems pretty fast to count votes.

Exit polls in the Netherlands suggest voters have firmly rejected the proposed European Union constitution in Wednesday's referendum.
The polls indicate that at least 62% of the electorate voted "No".
The BBC's William Horsley in Brussels says the ballot has probably delivered a death blow to the constitution, at least in its present form.>> |
