Resurrgance of ImperialApril 28 2001 at 1:27 AM | Andy Wright |
| - Looking round shops I have started to notice a resurrgance of dual marking on a lot of items. Two main companies are Marks and Spencer Foods and Tesco. I now make a habit of buying from these stores only. I have even noticed on some toiletry items Imperial is marked first. The tide may be turning, keep up the good work. |

Tesco now puts UK units on packaging as a matter of policy. Budgens intends to do so in the near future. Marks & Spencer seems more variable - much of its packaged foods has imperial but alot does not.
Although the phrase "dual marking" is widely used, it should be remembered that only the metric is now recognised in British/EU law. The presence of UK units is only as "supplementary indications" - in other words, information provided at the private discretion of the retailer. While BWMA welcomes such moves, we campaign for parity of metric and traditional units in UK law. |
