A question for imperialistsNovember 23 2001 at 8:48 AM | Duncan |
| - I understand that BWMA favours highway distance markings in miles and yards
[rather than kilometres and metres].
That being the case, do I understand that odometers in U.K. vehicles have
large dials for miles and smaller ones for yards?
If so, reason suggests that would be inferior to odometers reading
kilometres and tenths of kilometres.
Have I missed something?

Yes, Duncan, you have missed something.
Speedometers would be impossible to use if one had to constantly check on fractions of a mile, or kilometre. The point about distances in yards is that *everyone* understands them, including those 'metric educated' at school. John Prescott when Minister for Transport last year conceded in writing that it would be 'confusing' to have two systems of measurement running on traffic signs and signposts at the same time.

Do you remember John Prescott giving a speech about the Selby train crash? That the Land Rover went 'over one hundred metres' off the ground? (Why the hell not 'yards'?) | |
