I have sent this email to Bucks Council.
It's a big shame actually, because I have never seen a metric sign in Wycombe, until this one popped up uninvited!
Email to Bucks Council:
Dear Sir or Madam,
I would like to bring to your attention a misleading sign in Frogmore, High Wycombe.
The sign appears to warn oncoming drivers that there is a road restriction ahead but the distance displayed is in metres. Road signs in the UK should read, by law, British measures. Please could this matter be looked into at the soonest oportunity at least to keep the signs around Wycombe consistent, and consistent with the law.
The sign is placed before the railway bridge as you approach Frogmore with Safeway behind you.
Regards, and Happy Christmas
Steve Humphreys
P.S. I am baffled that a company is making 'illegal' signs in the first place, considering that they're not allowed to be used on British roads. DO you know of any reason why this company should be making unusable signs?
It could be that the local council's order form was made up in metres and the sign firm simply made up the sign as requested.
Having said that, the sign firm should have known the law. Then again, so should the council.

Re: Metric Sign in High Wycombe

Went to check the sign again on Wednesday 28 Feb. The council have replaced the sign with one reading yards.
Thus I designate Bucks Council "Council of the week"!!
Actually it's now important for me to write another email to Bucks Council complimenting them on their action.
I suggest this to all others who have found that their council have corrected illegal signs - it's alright to criticise but let's show some appreciation whenever a council actually does something in the public's favour!

Running Total of Demetrications
March 6 2002, 10:49 PM
This brings the running total of signs known to ARM to have been demetricated, by hook or by crook, to 1,017. Full list on request by e-mail or hard copy.
Perhaps BWMA could consider an annual award for the Council which best maintains Imperial units on its road and pedestrian signs?

I'll nominate Wycombe.
I believe there are NO metric signs in the area.
In loudwater they have a sign that shows weight restriction in CWT - interestingly the signis not an old shabby one but a newish one. I thought CWT wasn't used anymore?
Noticably I cannot remember any "dual" signs in Wycombe either.
