Forestry Commission (was Forestry Commission Signs in Bedfordshire demetricated)

January 22 2002 at 11:12 PM

The temporary lettering of 'yds' over the two '250 metres' signs at the entrance to the Forestry Commission site off the Shefford to Bedford Road (A507/B600) was removed by the Forestry Commission. I hear however that black-painted metal plates bearing white reflective lettering saying '275 YDS' have now ben affixed, making it likely that this will prove a much longer-lasting demetrication.

I have recieved other reports of metric distances erected by the Forestry Commission both outside and inside their forests. A visit to their website shows in a prominent position a visitor signpost clearly labelled '500 m'. Moreover, click on their cycling page and they boast '2,600 kilometres of woodland cycleways'.

An action programme in Britains' forests in the spring and summer is called for!

Their main web-pages, however, still give the precise location of the forests in miles from certain key towns and motorways. I suppose they still want their potential visitors to know exactly where they are!
