| - ARM's Chief Engineer, Q, reports that signs along the Essex Way footpath (West Essex) are in kilometres e.g '0.7 KM'. Measurements have been taken, and metal plaques 2 1/2" x 6" or 7" have now been ordered. In a new development, these will be painted over using a mid-brown cellulose-based paint to co-ordinate harmoniously with the colour of the signs.
The signs will be fixed in the usual way with Flexon 200. Given that the signs are wooden, attempted removal of ARM's plates will reveal hardened white gunge underneath making restoration of the original metric distances impossible. A raid in the early spring is likely.

Three wooden footpath signs with eight metric-only distances on them have been put back to British distances with the use of attractive brown-and-white metal plates. It is believed that these were the only metric signs along the Essex Way so we can announce that this footpath is now demetricated.
The running total of known demetrications in the U.K. now stands at 1,064. A total of 86 Councils, transport companies and other organisations have been responsible for erecting these signs
