democracy

Surely it is time that we all recognised that Britain is not a democracy? About 43% of the vote gives Tony Bair and his glove puppets about 70% of the seats in the House of Commons.

The British people did not want but got : the Dome, Maastricht, "EU" passports, the Channel Tunnel, the metric system, the "European Parliament" and presumably other rubbish I can't think of at the moment. Switzerland is free of the "EU" because Switzerland is a democracy. Surely we need direct democracy like the Swiss and a different voting system?

The answer to your problems

Well, this will never go over, because it would ruin your age old Parliament, but the only way to ensure that 35% of the people aren't ruling 100% of the government is to ditch proportional representation, and go to a winner take all, loser lose all system. That way, 1 member from 1 district wins a plurality, he goes to Congress (in our case), the loser(s) go(es) home with nothing. Sure keeps wacko's out of power...

Reminder: We don't use PR, we use "first past the post"

Interestingly though, Popstars (on TV recently) required votes to allow a winner of the contest. More votes were cast than at the General Election.

Hmmmmm.....

Direct Democracy

March 6 2002, 10:28 PM

We have had a gradual shift over the past 50 years from (then) MPs being elected to represent what the people want to (now) MPs being elected to carry out a largely hidden agenda of the political party in power. A serious position to be in. Allowing people to 'trigger' a referendum on an issue like, say, compulsory metrication, the euro or membership of the E.U. if they collect a petition of, say, 10% of the electorate, would in my judgment be a very handy weapon for the people given today's lack of democracy. Trouble is, direct democracy's not on the agenda of those in power!

It doesn't keep wackos out. It let Geroge W. Bush in.

But that's just your opinion.

It's true to say though that the left-wing parts of the press here (in the UK) make him out to be dangerous.

But that's down to freedom of the press, which I support no matter how distasteful
