Received today a letter from the Assistant Divisional Surveyor, Shropshire County Council, dated 30 July, about two signs on a road close to Ludlow:
"With reference to your letter dated 26 July 2002, the illegal metric distance plates you referred to have been removed".
A bit different from some authorities' attitudes only last year!
BASILDON (ESSEX)
And how about this from a letter dated 16 July 2002 (just received today) to resident of Vange, Basildon, Mr D Bannister, from Mr Terry Buck, Public Rights of Way and Cycling Officer, Basildon District Council, about illegal kilometre-only footpath signs in the area:
"These illegal metric signs, I believe, were erected some 10 to 15 years ago by my predecessor and are spread across the district. Unfortunately, I have no record of their location and therefore can only take action as I find them. I have been obliterating the offending measurements [sic] by spraying them out with black paint. I hope to be in a position to replace these signs at some time but at present I will continue to paint out any I come across".
Well, as the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em

Obviously Mr Buck is of the same mind as yourself Tony. Doubt if he needed much beating.

We got the point the first time pip, no need to post again with a slightly altered message!

Terry Buck - one of 33.5 million

Yes, Mr Buck and I seem to have the same mind - let's keep miles and yards on our signposts. According to the latest ICM survey carried out in April this year, there are roughly 33.5 million adults in the United Kingdom who normally think in miles and yards - and almost as many who want to keep British units on our signposts.
You, pip, are one of the remaining 1.5 million or so of Britain's 35 million or so adults who have a different view.
The point of my posting was that the responses of local authorities to being challenged about their illegal metric signs are very much improved since a year or so ago; I thought the two different letters from Shropshire and Basildon neatly encapsulated our progress.
