ARM will be pleased to send a complimentary set of 10 ARM postcards to the best answer on this message board to the following question (a set of 5 cards will be sent to other answers deemed by ARM to be 'highly commended' (*):

Which of the following is correct, or are both true?

1. Statement by Julie Kieszkiewicz, Traffic Management Division TM4, Department for Transport, 29 July 2002, in a letter to BWMA (Ref: GT17/14/1):

"The present government has no plans to use metric units for speed and distance on traffic signs"

2. Statement by Minister for Transport, David Jamieson, to House of Commons, replying on 11 July 2002 to a question from Mr Parmjit Dhanda:

"Although many drivers are familiar with metric, it would not be appropriate to fix a date for converting speed limit and distance signs while there is still likely to be a significant proportion of drivers for whom the change could be potentially confusing".

[NOTE that neither statement refers to the overwhelming preference of the British people not to spend hundreds of millions of pounds, or more, on such a conversion exercise. But then who said we live in a democracy?]

* Members of the Council of ARM are not able to enter this competition but anyone else is, including our most highly esteemed Forum Owner
