In the 'Portsmouth News' this week is a report "The Metric Martyrs Strike Back" with a lively account of ARM's most recent raid in Portsmouth illustrated by a clear photo of two ARM operatives wearing their distintive yellow high visibility jackets.
The 'News' put to Portsmouth Council the government's recent circular and Maggie Hill, a spokeswoman for Portsmouth Council, said: "The government's new guidelines reaffirm that we have to use imperial measurements for all traffic signs. We are considering the implications of this new guidance but consider that we have the power to erect the signs in their current form".
The news report also established that the metric pedestrian signs on the promenade were put up in 1994 with a £33,000 grant from the 'Brighter Cities Initiative'.
