"Metric Sign Squad Strike" - South London Press, 23 August 2002September 3 2002 at 8:11 AM | Tony Bennett |
| Extracts from South London Press 23.8.2002 (www.icsouthlondon.co.uk):
"The 'metric martyrs' have struck again - this time in an early morning raid on Tuesday. Vauxhall was the target as campaigners descended on a collection of nine pedestrian fingerposts, incorporarting 70 distances...again, hardly anyone batted an eyelid as the martyrs donned their trademark fluorescent jackets for their mission. Mr Bennett told South London Press: "One driver asked the group what they were doing and when they told him, his response was: 'bloody right'".
Only last week we reported how the pressure group descended on Lewisham...it also struck in Lewisham in December.
A Transport for London spokeswoman said: 'Changing all the signs in London to imperial measurements is not top of our budget priority'. She added that as they were informal road sign, the legislation does not apply".
