Hampshire Police Break Law on SignageOctober 6 2002 at 8:42 AM | Tony Bennett |
| - Two reports of new signs recently erected by Hampshire Police at various locations in Hampshire, which seem to be aimed at educating motorcyclists in the county. I understand from information received that they say: 'Motorcyclists - can you stop in 200m?'.
Enquiries are proceeding |

This does not appear to be a road sign in the strict sense of the word so is not covered by the legislation on road signs. |

Even without brakes most bikes could stop within 200 miles |

Steve - it is written into English Law that "m" is a symbol for "metres". The word "mile" or "miles" has no approved symbol or abbreviation. |

(oh not that old egg again)
....ok I must remember that when it actually says "Services 23m" as it does on the motorway I should slam my brakes on damn quick because the services entrance is just 25 yards after the sign!
Do you drive, Martin? |

Yes, I do drive.
I have driven cars with mph speedometers on roads that are signposted in miles (eg the UK and South Africa pre 1972);
cars with mph speedometers on roads that are signposted in km (eg the Continent and South Africa 1972-1978);
cars with speedometers in km/h and roads signposted in km (Spain, South Africa), but never cars with speedometers in km/h and road signposted in miles. |

Then you will know that some road signs have a small "m" denoting miles and NOT meters. |

Steve, I am fully aware that many British roads have a "m2 to denote "miles". I am also aware that when Mrs T was arguing with out EU partners in favour of keeping miles on British Road, it was agreed how "miles" should be represented. It appears that the officials who negotiated the details either did not drive or were not aware of what appears on UK roads.
The bottom line is the the UK is in breach of its international undertakings by continuing to use "m" as a symbol for "miles" |

Yes - Mrs T thought that she was being clever by leting DTI officials negotiate matters that concerned the DoT. |

It appears that because I support British measures you want harm to come to me (judging by what I've just read on two posts).

What's the difference between a British actuary and a Sicilian actuary?
A British actuary can tell you how many people will die in the next 24 hours.
A Sicilian actuary can give you their names and addresses.

Not really Steve. I was only joking. Just thought I'd give you a bit of a laugh.
