Harlow Demetrication on First January

January 2 2003 at 7:56 AM
Tony Bennett

Last month, Harlow Council erected an illegal triangular metric-only height sign with the dimension '2.1m' on it, giving the height restriction on the entrance to a new car park, near the entrance to their brand new Town Hall-cum Shopping Centre, to be opened soon. Underneath the triangular sign was a distance plate: '60 yds'.

The brand new illegal sign was removed yesterday to celebrate the New Year - and unless anyone knows different, this is claimed as the first demetrication of 2003. Harlow Council has been informed.

The removal was carried out using the authority of Section 131(2) Highways Act, 1980 (lawful to 'pull down signs unlawfully placed on the highway').

Last year, a Harlow town centre car park was converted by the Council from a height restriction of '6' 9"' to '2.1M'. Within days, the metric lettering was removed and the height in British distances restored. They remain in place to this day
