Another Imperial Victory - This Time in Norwich

-
There are just too many Imperial victories these days to find the time to report them all, but this one has some useful and up-to-date technical/legal material in it.

Energetic pro-Imperial campaigner MD from Aylsham, Norfolk, has persistently written to Norwich City Council about some illegal pedestrian signs erected close to Norwich cathedral.

This is part of the reply from Mr Andrew Watt, Transportation Manager, Norwich City Council, to MD, dated 27 March 2003:

"I have consulted the Council's legal section further and discussed the issue you raise with the Department for Transport.

"You may be aware that the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions statutory instrument has recently been updated. The new version (No. 3113) which is dated 2002 was issued on 31 January of this year.

"The new TSRGD includes a much wider range of directional signs for pedestrians (Schedule 7, Part VII). It is considered that the direction signs you refer to in the City accord with Diagram 2607 and therefore distance should be expressed in miles or yards.

"The Council is shortly to commence a review of all pedestrian signage within the City Centre. The intention is to replace and upgrade all signs to provide improved information for visitors in particular. As part of this process the signs you refer to will either be amended or replaced in accordance with the requirements of the TSRGD 2002".

Please tell me that ARM and ARM activists always send a letter back after this sort of response thanking them for their help and assistance.....

ARM Response to Local Authority 'Concession' Letters

April 9 2003, 5:45 PM

Steve,

Local authority 'concession' letters vary from very grudging to grateful. They are often received after great persistence and the concession requently comes only after the legal section of the authority has been consulted.

The Norwich one is in the middle - about average. MD was snubbed originally but after several polite but persistent letters, eventually citing the 16 July 2002 letter from Mike Talbot of the Department for Transport, he won through in the end.

We don't always say 'thank you' but it's a good point and we will take it on board.

Anyone who would like to thank Mr Watt at Norwich can 'phone him on 01603 212515 or e-mail him on andywatt@norwich.gov.uk
