Another Metric-only Sign Causes an Accident - Report by Local District Councillor

This report has been received by Active Resistance to Metrication, by e-mail, from a Conservative District Councillor. It is reproduced verbatim below:

"You may like to know that after much battling over many months, I had the local Council, of which I am a Conservative member, replace the metric height sign over the loading bay with a proper feet and inches sign. The loading bay received damage from a lorry backing into it. Subsequently I calculated that the metric height, 3.4m, was actually incorrect, hence the damage.

"The new Imperial sign, which I feel was installed against much internal opposition, possibly from pro-Euro Council Officers, states that the height is 10' 6". Any driver would be alerted by that, while 3.4m means very little (except that it translates to 11' 3").

"Thought you woud like to know"

- Councillor Don Hoyle

If only the tories were a bit more in touch with the modern world they might give Tony a bit of opposition.

The Tories are more in touch, if you ask me, than the Labour party. I would like to see the Howard the next PM.. and then labour after that, then tories again, the labour etc. This 18 yrs of Tories and as much with Labour is NO good for our country.

REPLY: What might be very 'good for our country' would be for the United Kingdom Independence Party to have a brief turn. Unless it is elected to power, very likely 'our country' will be Europe, not the United Kingdom, before very long

Maybe, but UKIP aren't winning any general elections any time soon. If they get a significant share of the vote at the next general election, that will damage the tories and thus destroy this country.

Right - so the Tories should say "Metric is really modern so if we get elected we promnise to make as many things as metric as possible".

Yeah, a really "modern" vote winner.

Another bit of tabloid style reporting

August 7 2004, 9:12 AM

The title to this thread implies that the accident was caused by the fact that the sign was metric only.

If the sign had been marked 11' 6" it could have provoked the accident in a similar way, assuming that the driver knew the height of his/her vehicle.

An RHA survey has shown that the biggest single cause of bridge strikes is the driver not knowing the height of their vehicle.
