Sustrans - 10,000th mile of safe cycle paths opened

Extracts from a report headed: "Charity celebrates a decade of giving" in tonight's 'Harlow Citizen' follow:

-----------------

"More than 100 cyclists stopped in Harlow on their way from London to Cambridge to help national transport charity Sustrans celebrate a decade of achievement.

Sustrans, based in Bristol, is the charity behind the National Cycle Network and moved into its 11th year with the opening of the 10,000th mile of safe cycle paths.

Sustrans regional manager and cycle leader Nigel Brigham said: "It is ten years since Lottery funding helped to set up the network and obviously the milestone of 10,000 miles is quite an achievement..."

COMMENTS:

1. Sustrans celebrated the 10,000th mile of cycleways, not the 10,000th kilometre

2. All Sustrans National Cycle Network cycleway signs use miles and yards only - and never put metric in brackets afterwards. Unlike 100-plus Councils and other bodies who routinely break the law in this respect, Sustrans doesn't

3. Sustrans has erected thousands of directional signs, adding to the 1.5 million or so signs that would have to be changed at vast expense if the government were ever so daft as to inflict compulsory metrication of road signs on the U.K.

4. The event was a 'milestone'

This could be for any one of a number of reasons:

1) They "subcontract" the actual design and erection of road signs to the local government planning office. In such cases SUSTRANS has no view on the units used.

2) They are cautious with their money and reciognise that the best way to prevent vandalisation of their signs by self-appointed prima-donna vigilantes.

Why would it not be possible t replace them with metric signs when they reach the end of their useful lives (8-10 years)? This is what the Irish did.

Are all signs 8-10 yrs old at the same time then?
