The Council of Active Resistance to Metrication has now received from BBC TV 'Look North' a videotape of its news item, transmitted on 28 July 2005, on York City Council's decision to cover over its illegal metric footpath signs with oblong plastic discs showing distances in Imperial.
The news item includes a City Council statement reproduced here verbatim:
"We're holding our hands up and we're not being precious about it. We do realise we did the wrong thing and we're putting it right".
In introducing the news item, the presenters stated as a simple fact: "metric signs are illegal". Peter Rogers of Active Resistance to Metrication was interviewed and explained the objections of ARM - and of course the vast majority of British people - to having signs in kilometres suddenly appear in their country.
Not a bad outcome for a campaigning organisation described by some on these boards as 'silly'.
The simple message of the news item was:
York City Council Highways and footpaths officials - wrong
ARM campaigners - correct
