| - There are several metric-only height signs outside the Waterloo Bridge exit of Waterloo Station. In nearby Leake Street, there are several more, plus metric width signs. Letter to be dispatched this weekend. |

Lambeth Transport reply in a letter dated March 21st 2001 that, under section 16 (permitted variants) of the Traffic Signs regulations, metric signs are legal.
They also say that the signs do not come under their juristiction.
A reply will be sent pointing out that section 16 does not permit metric-only signs, and asking them whose juristiction the signs do come under. |

Lambeth Transport indicate that one sign is owned by the Shell Centre and the rest by Eurostar. Letters have been written to both.
The reply from Eurostar, received June 11th 2001, reads as follows:
"My Colleagues and I have inspected the signs which you detail in your letter. These signs are metric to provide help to our many international travellers arriving and departing at the station. The signs provide information relating to the private service road which runs around the station and as such we do not consider the 1994 Traffic Regulations and General Directions applies to this area and for this reason we do not consider it necessary to install dual metric and imperial measurements.
Dennis Thomas, Property Resource Manager".
Needless to say, BWMA will be responding to this in due course. |

| Three Waterloo Station Signs demetricated | July 22 2001, 9:07 AM |
Hallo, this is 'Rod'. The two metric signs (saying
' 2.9m ') on Tenison Way, as you approach, from the south, the main Waterloo Station roundabout (south of Waterloo Bridge), have now been painted over with white gloss paint and large Department of Transport-style lettering in black card substituted, saying
' 9' 6" '. Another sign just before the height restriction itself on the station approach has been dealt with in a similar way. That leaves, we think, 5 signs still to be dealt with, two more saying '2.9m', two saying '3.3m', and one saying 3.0m'.
All of them are in areas where almost immediate attention from 'Eurostar' staff is likely to be attracted and some are hard to reach. We note however that they are all illegal and the fact that they may be on 'private property' is irrelevant since they are on roads to which the public has access
