Cambridgeshire - 60 metre sign

MEP Jeffrey Titford's office has written the following letter, dated February 13th, to the Traffic Management of Cambridgeshire County Council.

Dear [etc],

Re: Illegal Metric Sign - Broad Street, MARCH - recently erected

I am amazed that, further to previous correspondence in which you recognised that metric signs on road and pedestrian distance signs were illegal, your authority has recently erected another illegal metric sign. This time, it appears to have been erected by your agents, Fenland District Council, to whom a copy of this letter is being sent.

The sign, in Broad Street, reads as follows: "New Road Layout Ahead; No U-turn at Traffic Lights: Use new U-turn facility: 60m ahead".

Please replace the entire sign, or over-label 60m with the appropriate British distance, i.e. 66 yards.

Please provide an explanation as to why Cambridgeshire County Council persists in erecting illegal signs contrary to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994.

Please advise what steps are being taken by Cambridgeshire County Council to ensure that only British distance signs, in conformity with the Regulations, are being erected in future.

Please also state what action is being taken to remove the illegal pedestrian distance signs erected in Ely, on which we are still awaiting a reply from your office.

We await hearing from you.
