A real difficulty has been posed by Councils having erected a number of heavy cast-iron metric pedestrian signs. The most notorious are some 30-plus in Portsmouth; other offending signs have been spotted in, inter alia, Glastonbury, Durham, Edmonton and Ware (Hertfordshire).
One problem is that whether or not they are 'traffic signs' covered by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1994 is not entirely clear, making any legal action risky.
An anti-metric engineer has now come forward with a solution. Plates with the correct distance in yards can be designed to fit on top of the metric distances. They can be affixed there with a heavy epoxy-style resin, which would entirely surround the metric distances which at present stand proud and provide a fir adhesive for the 'imperial plate'. This would all make it very hard for the authorities to dismantle them.
So we ae now looking at receiving reports, please, of the sites of metric cast-iron pedestrian signs. Please give us an accurate location and a 'team' will be despatched a.s.a.p. to effect our proposed modification!
