Strung out along the 7 miles or so of Bournemouth's promenade are signs with metric distances, e.g. to the pier or the next 'chine' (a short steep valley ending on the seafront). They're high up and quite small. I estimate there are a few dozen of them. They're painted aluminium signs, specailly designed for the purpose. There are other signs - plastic - attached to the walls of the promenade, also giving distances to toilets in metres
