Neil Herron reports the erection two days ago of what he beleives to be the first metric sign in Sunderland, bearing the legend: 'Fish Quay - 700 metres'. It appears to be a one-off sign, in white lettering on green. Elsewhere on the quay and in the town there are older signs all in yards and miles.
When Neil contacted the 'Sunderland Echo', no-one in Sunderland Council could be found admitting to having erected the sign, and the Council's Press Office was unavailable for comment.
