Yes: a butcher in Berkshire, market traders in Lewisham, and a greengrocer in Devon.

Great news to see the TSA is doing their job. Metrication continues on course.

Is this an example of winning an argument?

Lost

re (metre): "Metrication continues on course. Is this an example of winning an argument?"

REPLY: Well now, let's see.

Kilometre signs going back into miles.

Metre signs going back into yards.

Knight Rutley no longer mentioning square metres in their ads, now only referring to square feet.

Safeway organic milk back in pints.

Sweet manufacturers coming up with 'Halfpounder' bags.

Cider companies making 'One Pint' cans again.

Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer announce their babies' weights in pound and ounces with no kilos in brackets afterwards.

Recent survey shows 98% of Brits know their height in feet and inches but only 29% in metric.

Lord Howe and UKMA both say metrication is 'off course' and are pretty steamed up about it into the bargain.

[All the many other examples snipped to save time scrolling down]

No, I really don't think this is an example of winning an argument...

Metric still winning

August 1 2004, 4:28 PM

That's a win?

Looks more like 100 steps forward and half a step back.

When the last two laws are changed, you will see all of this returning to metric.

Did you completely ignore Tony's post?

And anyway - I thought that this board was not for "kids".

Raids, you say? Over measurement? What the **** is wrong with your government? Are they afraid that they might get hurt going after ACTUAL criminals? (That’s why my government likes to lock up innocent business people and non-violent drug-users – they don’t shoot back. Politicians look tough on crime and no police are injured. Everyone wins except for the victims of real crimes)

I ought to direct people from 'The Great Debate' to this thread when they ask why we don't like metrication. It isn't that we don't like meters -- well, actually I DO prefer yards -- it's that we don't like jack-booted Gestapo thugs kicking our doors because they suspect us of harboring fugitive yardsticks and Imperial scales. Didn't we fight a war to end this kind of oppression? I seem to remember my grandfather being in the navy at that time -- and he said that the war was to end oppression. Maybe he was mistaken.
