A reply by Sainsburys to an email from a BWMA supporter:
Thanks for your email on the issue of metrification. I am sorry to hear of your annoyance with the move to label products in metric measurements.
Metrification has been gradually introduced since decimalisation first took place some 30 years ago. Since then more and more products have been re-labelled with metric measurements.
We were legally bound to introduce metric weights by the end of 1999. So with effect from 1 January 2000, it became a legal requirement to sell all loose products in metric measures.
We do intend to provide dual pricing until 31 December 2010 - as long as we are legally allowed to do so. I do assure you that metrification brings no financial benefit to us.
I do appreciate your views on this, and I am glad you have taken the time to write to us on this issue. However, as I am sure you appreciate, we are not in a position to go against this legislation.
Thanks again for contacting us.
Kind regards
