I talked to a friend who is visiting me from India. Here are the details regarding measurement that I have obtained.
Road signs are always in km and km/hr. Petrol is sold by the litre. However, miles are widely understood and it would not be unusual to talk in miles. Gallons are not familiar.
There are a few areas where only imperial are used. These are areas of real estate (square feet), measuring land (acres) and height of people (feet and inches). Weight of people is measured in kilograms, except for babies, whose weight at birth is given in pounds by tradition.
For short distances and heights of buildings, etc., feet and metres are both used but metres more frequently. Yards are virtually never used.
Weather is always in degrees celsius. Food in stores is always labeled in metric only unless imported from the US, in which case it may be dual labeled, but this doesn't seem to bother anyone.
I don't know if this information is helpful or intersting to anyone, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
Basically the general mix of imperial and metric that I expected.
Get ready for people to tell you that you are wrong though!
It's like convincing these people that Australians commonly use imperial too!
Unfortunately these people don't visit these places but have a wealth of information about the measurements these people use!
Please refer to my numerous "are you from the UK" jibes to see what I mean! They even advertise Britain this way!
Couldn't live without 'em though....

Imperial measurements in India
October 22 2003, 10:08 AM
After I'd been trekking in India nine years ago, I had a shirt made for me in a foothill town. All measurements were taken in inches and I remember very well that the tape measures they used were NOT marked in centimetres. I still have the shirt...

I think you'll find they do !
Just like the (infamous) inch tape that was used on me in Cologne, Germany!
Oops! Here comes Eric!

Those of us who advocate the complete adoption of the metric system do not rely on claims of its general popularity.
We can and do argue on the basis of merit.

"do not rely on claims of its general popularity"
A wry smile besits my face.
I think I might have invented another new word there, by the way.

But if what is meritable (new word!) is not popular, surely there is a reason for it? Perhaps people have different opinions of what has merit.
