| What is going on? This has been a fairly high quality discussion - one which this site is generally not used to.
Lowlife makes a case for the clubs groundsharing - but it is not a good enough case. Not surprisingly, he finds it difficult to see it from any other point of view than a United one. If City sold up and put their £££ into the Abbey, it would improve United's position immeasurably. But in the long term, it would push City towards either a merger, or extinction (same thing really).
It really is impossible to see how ground share can work between two clubs of (presently) different stature.
And there is an unhappy precedent - Wealdstone, who were once one of the the top non-league teams (winning the double of Conference and FA Trophy in 1985), sold their ground and moved in with Watford for two seasons (1991-93). Since then, they have been dropping like a stone. Ultimately, they couldn't afford the rent - and have spent the last few seasons playing at other non-league grounds. From a position of strength, they have drpped much further down the pyramid and are desperately trying to move back to a ground closer to home.
Motto: City are far better off surviving at our own ground - and looking to improve matters over time - than suffering a long slow death at someone else's. | |
