Wilde

He played for City, personally I didn't think he had a very good game at all.

He didn't play for either side, really. He was well marked by the United RB and didn't get into the game much. He was sensibly taken off not long into the 2nd half - no doubt to save him for more important matches. Clements was more of an influence wide on the right.

I thought United were powder-puff - some good football from them in places but they created few real chances. If the 2nd half is anything to go on (where it was two different teams), our squad has more depth than theirs.

Collins looked the business

July 19 2002, 10:09 AM

Football time again, I love it!!

I thought Darren Collins looked excellent last night, he claimed that he worked hard and he really did, some of his tackling was awesome for a forward. Shane Wardley looked pretty comfortable even though he faced the pace of their player (Tudor I think). Collin Vowden looked commanding and Steve Holden did really well to cope with their man mountain One. I noticed that Adie Hayes only just failed to release Wilde on the flank on a number of occasions, it's pleasing to see a player in the middle looking for those kind of passes, he also took his pen expertly.

Bloomfield looked pretty sharp in the second half but i feel he would have benefited by playing in the first half alongside Collins, as it was the mix and match side of the second half didn't really allow any of the triallists to shine.

But all in all a good work out.

depth

City's squad definitely has reasonable depth, perhaps something where Batch deserves some praise.

However, City did play the same outfield ten for the first part of the second half, as opposed to ten changes out of eleven for United. United's captain, best striker, most experienced centre-back and first-choice left-back all failed to appear at all.

You don't have to make excuses

Some City fans might be gloating but I think the majority will only be happy that City won, and that the new signings all looked ok.

It was only a friendly and as a result a training exercise for both sides......in such games it really doesn't matter what the score was, only how players perform as both individuals and units around the field.

True

July 19 2002, 10:37 AM

True, but I was personally very disappointed with the application of all but a couple of United players in the first half. Training exercise or not, several seemed to think they could walk round the pitch and take all the time they wanted, as if they were playing a kids team rather than a decent DML side.

Collins showed the right attitude - play properly in pre-season, get match-ready.

but isn't that so often the case?

July 19 2002, 11:19 AM

when Pro's come up against non-league sides there so often appears to be an air of "turn up to win" doesn't there? that's why we have giant killings in the FA Cup.

Still I thought Scully and Tudor looked pretty handy, but One? what's he about? lack of motivation? lack of fitness? certainly doesn't look like the million pound prospect i have heard about.

One, a million pounds?!?!

July 19 2002, 8:34 PM

I have to say, I have only seen Armand One play once, in the United Vs Oldham match last year, but on that occasion he looked absolutely terrible!

For a (very, very) tall man, he was poor in the air, he was slow, he had no touch, and he couldn't shoot. As I said, I have only seen him play once, so I am far from the best placed person to offer a balanced comment upon him, but for him to be touted as a million pound prospect on that performnce would be outrageous... He wouldn't have made it into my Sunday League team on that day!

Just a quick comment about the "turn up and win" attitude that United supposedly showed last night... I was not at the game, due to work commitments, but this illustrates a point I made in an earlier thread, that was disputed... United DO think they are a bigger club than they actually are... Perhaps their fans appreciate they are a small club, but certain players and club officials cannot seem to realise that in their present state it won't be long until the gap between the two clubs is even smaller, (i.e. perhaps a meeting in the Football Conference next season!!!)

One

July 22 2002, 9:35 AM

One is extremely inconsistent, thats for sure, and not very popular with a lot of U's fans. He is poor in the air, but when in the mood is very, very good on the deck and has scored some blinding goals.

The 'turn up and win' attitude disappointed me, but that came from the players not the fans. But to be fair, first pre-season friendly of any description, I guess they were unlikely to go haring around like it was a real local derby.
