He retired just 10 years ago. The game was already changing at that point. He played pretty much the same game as the previous era and still smacked people around. In his last 5 years (1992-1997) he went 60-3 and won 3 NCs. The 90's are part of the current era. It actually began in the mid to late 80's as the option became increasingly replaced by the pro style offense. By the early 90's, only a few schools in Division IA still ran the option (Nebraska being the most note-worthy). In the early 90's the spread option was developed which has helped to bring on the additional changes we see impacting college football today. He was around for all of that. He came, he kicked butt, he won national championships. And I hated him.
