In any event, I support your conclusion. I graduated back in 87 and was there when we beat the Bear in '82 and '84. I had to listen to the away game on radio when we won in '83, but saw the incredible win in '85 on TV. "Van Tiffin lines up for what will be a 60 yard FG for the win... and the snap; the ball is straight enough... is it long enough????? NO GOOD! Tennessee holds on for the win!" What a year that was! Underdogs in almost every game. Destroyed Miami in the Sugar Bowl. That is what Tennessee football is about. Apparently, we do better with inferior talent. Anyway, back to the future.
You're right. They talk to the players about Tennessee tradition, about the Alabama rivalry and what this game means to the team, the coaches, the university, the fans and the state of Tennessee. But methinks they've lost touch with the reality of what it requires on their part to maintain that tradition: to win the games we are supposed to win and to steal a few we shouldn't win. Well, Alabama stole one today...; ripped it from us on the opening onsides kick-off, and we could do nothing to take it back. And this wasn't the first, second or third time this has happened. Enough is enough.
No, they haven't forgotten Tennessee tradition; they've just betrayed it. If you can't win these games, go coach at Nichols State.
