Hello,
I am interested in getting a Doberman a few years down the road. I was just wondering how their temperments relates to the American Bulldog. The temperment of an American Bulldog, is stubborn, pushy, active, and can be aggressive. Aggression as in doesn't like other male dogs or very aware of surroundings. I don't want to get a Doberman until I move out of my parent's home because of the fact that my family's bulldog (Kaiser) will attack any male dog that gets too close unless controlled by me. But I would like to know if anybody knows about the similiarities. I love the Bulldogs, but I also love the traits of the Doberman. Also my bulldog gets along with most female little dogs, does this happen with Dobermans? I realize that all dogs are individuals, but maybe you guys can give me some general viewpoints. Thanks for your help. Emily
You hit the nail on the head with all dogs being different. While you can expect basic generalities about a breed, the rest is up to you. Any dog, if you properly train and socialize the devil out of him, can make a good companion and social creature. Seriously, you cannot socialize a puppy enough, in all environments. The more you do, the less you may have to deal with any kind of aggression issues down the road.
I had to share though cause my nieghbor has an American Bulldog. He is pretty obedient, definately pushy, active, but not aggressive that I've seen. He accepted our dobie and they became fast friends. We have a male and the Bulldog is intact too. Recently our neighbors got a Rotweiller too, again intact, and the two of them seem to get along fine. I think personally they are pushing their luck but so far so good. Both their dogs are big softies.
But again, I don't think you could figure what to expect by the breed (except mild generalities). Aggression is almost always born out of fear, and that is why socialization is the #1 most important thing you can do. Every pup I've seen who has been highly socialized, regardless of breed, turned out to be an amazingly stable dog.
There are many breeds that have a low tolerance for either other bitches or males. IME with five Dobermans, the three males have not been dog aggressive at all. They were neutered at about the age of sexual maturity and heavily socialized in situations where the other dogs were also not aggressive. I think that is the key. I wouldn't advise anyone to take the potential for male/male aggression lightly but there is no guarantee that bitches aren't same sex aggressive either. Keeping males intact is just upping the ante for dog aggression.
are male to male aggressive, it's a known breed trait. there are exceptions of course, but they are exceptions, they are not the rule. you cannot predict when you get a male doberman puppy whetherit will grow up to be one of the exceptions or not. this aggression is triggered by puberty, and even early neutering will usually not eliminate in ar so if you are asking if you can have a doberman around your male bulldog it should in general be all right with a female doberman, but not with a male doberman.
