Mr Davis,

I train by myself in Jkd, with some instruction from a past instructor and reading books. It's difficult for me to go to a class because as a mechanic I have to buy tools to keep with my trade. But I would like to be with you and continue to grow. I have practiced martial arts since I was twelve, and I want to increase. I don't care about rank, just the knowledge. Is it a good idea to read books and practice the material? And do you still read and practice the material therein? I have called my personal style Combat kung fu because of the red tape of the word Jeet Kune Do. My instructor D. Johnson in Kansas City have taught me JKD but is was more like kickboxing. Is it wrong to practice by onesself? You can contact me personally by my e-mail @ jormainw@yahoo.com. Thanx

Self Training

May 3 2006, 3:23 PM

Hello!

There is nothing at all wrong with self training, as long as you are comprehending the material fully! I still, to this very day, will purchase ANY material (books, magazines, videos, DVDs, VCDs, CDs) on Bruce Lee's original methods! The problem faced by many is that in the self training process, they get something wrong along the way that messes up everything they do from that point on! The best advice that I can give you is to BE SURE that you get everything correct to the best of your ability! If you are unsure about anything, DON'T practice it until a competent instructor can show you how to do it right! Feel free to ask for advice on this forum, but just be aware that I am very busy, and sometimes cannot reply immediately! There are several prominent JKD practitioners on here that can help you! Feel free to make use of this forum as much as possible! Glad to have you on board!

Keep Blasting!

"What is Jeet Kune Do (JKD)? Chinese martial art, definitely! It is a kind of Chinese martial art that does away with the distinction of branches, an art that rejects formality, an art that is liberated from tradition." __Bruce Lee

Training alone

May 4 2006, 8:32 AM

Hello Ty!

I too practice a lot alone. If you get a chance,
I recommend you purchase some of Sifu Davis'
JKD videos. They are excellent and very in depth.
If you have any doubts as to how a certain move
is performed, these tapes will shed a lot of light
on it.

Also, equipment training is great! There is a lot
you can do with it, especially after studying the
videos. You can make a lot of the equipment
yourself.

If you have a chance to come to one of the seminars
that Sifu Davis teaches, that will give you great
"hands on" experience, as well. I have been going
to them for about 4 years (when I can) and they
are excellent!

Hope this helps. Take care.

Dick Jeffries
