Sifu Davis: Martial Arm

Sifu Davis yesterday I was searching around the internet and decided to run a search on a machine called the Martial Arm. Its sort of a wooden dummy only its not wooden and it does not have legs or a body. Its a just a vertical striking surface with an extended arm. What are you thoughts on this and its usefulness? Is it a helpful training tool? Was also curious on the streamlined jeet kune do that Howard Williams practices, could you elaborate on this? Thanks in advance.

Javier.

Martial Arm / Howard Williams

June 20 2006, 6:54 AM

Hello Javier!

I have not had any experience with the Martial Arm, so I really cannot say much about it! I am planning to purchase one in the future for my personal training room though. At that time I will post my opinions of it! It looks like a great tool for developing sensitivity and economy of structure.

Howard Williams pretty much teaches the bai jong, a little bit of footwork, a few hand strikes, a few kicks, some combinations, some lin sil die dar, entering movements and very little trapping. From what I remember, that's about it!

Must be pretty sreamlined. What are in your opinion the best lessons learned from Howard Sifu. Can you give me any drills from the Oakland period that might still be useful today, primarily for punching and kicking?

P.S. The martial is only $210, not bad huh? Also, I'm sorry for being to darn curious. If you have any problems with this Sifu, don't hesitate to tell me things bluntly.
Thanks in advance. Oh and good morning!

Javier.

Problems ...

June 20 2006, 9:22 AM

Hello Javier!

And good morning to you as well! I would not say that I have any "problems" with Howard Williams, but I will say that I feel there is a lot more to Jeet Kune Do than what he offers! But, just as I have my interpretations of Bruce Lee's methods, so does he, and he is entitled to that! As for specific drills, nothing really comes to mind other than the three way and five way kicking drills. I gave an in-depth description of those on this forum quite a while back.

Bruce used to say that the student should learn to box with his feet. What are a few basic focus pad punching and kicking drills for the basic tools do you teach Sifu? For example side kick, hook kick , front kick, straight lead and backfist. It will help me a lot in my training if you could give a few drills as there are no jeet kune do instructors near my area. Thanks again Sifu Davis.

Was reading around the forum,in page 16 there's a post by dani and you e-mailed him 'tons of word documents containing jeet kune do and bruce lee info'. While I do own a lot of books and know about Bruce Lee, I think nothing as too much information. I'll greatly appreciate it. Greatly. Of course, only if its possible.
Thanks in advance Sifu.
