Sifu are you aware of a Scottish jeet kune do instructor named Tommy Carruthers. He has trained with Ted Wong, Jesse Glover, Howard Williams and Leo Fong. What are opinions, if any?

pretty quick!

I have only seen video clips of him, so I imagine Sifu Davis knows a lot more, but what I saw, he looked pretty fast!

Hello Javier!

I have seen Tommy at one of the Nucleus events. I was fairly impressed with what I saw of him. Much of what I have seen him do is more "kenpo-like" than JKD though. There is also some telegraph in some of his movements. He is very explosive though! Overall, I would rate his abilities pretty high!

Kenpo

June 21 2006, 11:54 AM

Hello Again!

In Ed Parker's kenpo system, they have a lot of slapping, quick hand movements that don't really serve any pupose other than to "speed up" the hand movements, make more contact with the opponent and make you look fast! There is also some chambering of the hand at the side after the execution of a technical sequence, and some stamping of the feet at different times. I have seen these things in Tommy's technique demos. I don't know if he has any kenpo background or not, but it does appear that way! That is what I meant by "kenpo-like" movements.

I guess he must have some type of kenpo influence. In your experience, should original jeet kune do look like Mr.Carruthers performs it. If not so, what should original jeet kune do look like? Thanks Sifu.

Javier.

Original JKD

June 21 2006, 2:03 PM

Hello Javier!

Original Jeet Kune Do will look different, based on the individual and who they learned from! Therefore, that is an almost impossible question to answer! I can say that for me, it is very economical structure (no unnecessary movement), good bai jong position, power side forward with leading tools ready to intercept, knowledge of lin sil die dar, Bruce Lee's Five Ways of Attack, good sticking/trapping skills, good centerline defensive/offensive abilities and the necessary attributes to bring it all together and make it work like it is supposed to!

Re: Original JKD

Now that you mention the power side forward theory. Do you think a natural right handed person with a lead left hand/left leg lead can make jeet kune do work without having to switch leads. Same question for the natural left handed person who would have to switch from a lead right hand/right leg lead to a left hand/left leg lead? Could it be possible for jeet kune do to work the same way? Thanks Sifu.

Power Side Forward

June 21 2006, 2:57 PM

Hello Javier!

Jeet Kune Do is a POWER SIDE FORWARD art! That is one of the guiding principles set forth by the founder! Therefore, if your right side is your poawer side, it should be forward! If your left side is your power side, it should be forward! Technically, if your power side isn't forward in your primary bai jong position that is taught, you ARE NOT doing Jeet Kune Do! Of course, if the oppoent comes from your left and your right side is your power side, you may not have time to assume a right lead bai jong! The point here is that JKD IS a POWER SIDE FORWARD martial art! That is how it is designed to work!

Re: Power Side Forward

June 21 2006, 4:58 PM

Don't you think it would be practical to be proficient in a right lead bai jong and a left lead bai jong? To be able to use your tools on both sides. That way you wouldn't be off guard if and when a confrontation and a possible fight breaks out. Thanks Sifu.

Javier.

Versatile

June 21 2006, 5:03 PM

Of course you want to be able to perform from either lead! That is what I meant when I referred to the possibility of an opponent coming from your left side! It is most desirable to get your power side forward at the earliest possible moment though!

centerline

June 21 2006, 2:22 PM

Javier

I can say this from experience that Sifu Lamar teaches and drills his students/instructors in attacking and defending the centerline with no wasted energy or motion. One hit/strike/kick to the next hit/strike/kick no waste of anything.

Tommy Carruthers has no kenpo training. He has an amateur boxing background, karate training and self-defense training from his father. Tommy started training in jeet kune do by himself in the 1970's and later trained with jesse glover, howard williams, ted wong and leo fong.
