Could you clarify who are the the top ranked First Generation students/instructors in Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.
Where does this leave the First Generation students who trained with Bruce and then left him to do their own thing? I'm interested in your view of this question.

JKD Instructors

February 11 2007, 12:49 PM

Hello Martin!

Interesting question, and not an easy one by any means! I consider the following First Generation students to be primary, based on their rank as recognized by Bruce Lee: Taky Kimura, Dan Inosanto. After them, the following based on their recognition by Dan Inosanto: Jerry Poteet, Ted Wong, Daniel Lee. Then there is Jesse Glover, who, in my opinion, as Bruce Lee's first student and assistant instructor, is in a class all of his own (partially due to having the benefit of the early one-on-one training with Bruce Lee, and partially due to what he has done with that knowledge since Bruce Lee's passing). Then there are those who deserve more recognition than they seem to get, such as: Steve Golden, Bob Bremer, Leo Fong, Allen Joe, George Lee and Pete Jacobs. Of course there are many more, but these come to mind immediately! Also consider that this is not taking into consideration the many highly skilled, and extremely knowledeable Second Generation instructors! As for the other Bruce Lee students who are doing their own thing, such as Patrick Strong, Joseph Cowles and James DeMile, they too deserve to be recognized for their skills and contributions to the further development of Bruce Lee's art! The bottom line is this: NO ONE that had the opportunity to train one-on-one with Bruce Lee at any time in their life is insignificant, and can contribute something to the mix, so therefore they should all be recognized as important! I hope that sufficiently answers your question!

Just to continue the question

Thanks for the reply which was helpful.
Who in your opinion has spent the most time training with Bruce? Before he left, John Little told me that he had Bruce's daytime diaries and he was planning to get them published as they contained exact details of who trained with Bruce and for how long.

Time with Bruce Lee

February 14 2007, 1:42 PM

Hello Martin!

I am not really sure who spent the most time with Bruce Lee, but I would say it would be between Dan Inosanto, James Lee and Ted Wong from what I have been told. Of course, the daytimers just represented a short period of time in Bruce Lee's life, so you couldn't base everything on that, but as it stands right now, we may never get to see those daytimers! By the way, you have mail on the way!

I know that Sigung Taky spent a lot of time training with Bruce as well.
He is ranked 5th in JFJKD by Bruce Lee which is some achievement!

I would like to add...

February 14 2007, 1:50 PM

that not one OBLS has the whole picture. Each had/has a unique and different view, understanding and way that they were trained as well as the era they trained in. Some have went on to explore Wing Chun and found new truths to JKD.
Also so much is made of how much time someone had with Bruce. It is not the amount of time but the quality of the instructor and the student. A student could spend years with a quality teacher such as Bruce Lee (even Sifu Lamar) but still be wong.

Hi Kent
Bruce gave the highest rank to Sigung Taky because he is a person of incredible integrity and ability.
I don't buy into the myth that the system changed radically as it has the same root and when we understand this then we can comprehend "all the blossoms".
Taky is too humble to promote himself ,unlike many others, but having trained with him and spent time with him I have no doubt that he is fully aware of the whole system. He deserves to be Bruce's highest ranked student and all serious students of JKD should give credit and honour to the man. I am proud to have him as my Instructor. To be honest with you he is one of the best men I have ever met in my life!
all the best

A quick question Mr. D

May 13 2008, 10:49 AM

Hi Sir Lamar,

Johnny W. here. I hope that all is well with you. I was conducting a Google search and came across this thread. I found it interesting so stopped by to read it. I agree with what you have said here but wonder why there is little to no mention Oakland kwoon original students in your lists here? Just curious thats all. Be well old friend.

Hello Johnny!

Notice that I said "Of course there are many more, but these come to mind immediately!" I just listed those known to me that I have spent time with, who are very skilled and came to mind right away. I could have easily mentioned Leo Fong and Steve Johnson, who I found to be very skilled and knowledgeable! By the way, I am doing very well, and hope you are doing the same my friend! Take care and God Bless!
