What's your favorite entry?

I know this is something that needs to be variable so that you don't become too predictable, but my personal favorite is to lead in with a low kick (either lead straight kick or lead stomp kick) to the shin or knee followed by a lead hand strike while touching down. I like this because the kick reaches the opponent quickly and draws his attention low. There are other things that I do, but I find myself using this quite a bit. What entries do you like best and why?

It really depends on the attacker. Are they super aggressive or more passive? What kind of stance are they taking; what kind of ground are you on at the time? Lots of variables. If they take a more western style boxing stance or hands held high (as this is the current in thing to do)I like a low line kick to the groin or knee followed by a punch. This is what I have encountered the most.

Hello Kent,

I suppose I'd say against someone in a JKD bai jong stance or a kickboxing stance as that's what I've typically worked this against and from a distance at the rim of the fighting measure. If I'm closer I feel I don't have to enter as you're already "in". Same for a "super aggressive" attacker as he'll be coming "in" to my stop hit/kick. If he's far enough out I may use the same entry to cut him off before he gets close. I haven't done much training on different types of ground, though I suppose if I was on slippery ground I wouldn't want to kick at all.

The entry you gave was similar to the one I mentioned. What variations might you use on different types of ground, against more aggressive opponents, or against people holding their hands low rather than high?

Regards,

John M. Drake

Well, there are many variables here, but without taking those into account, I would have to say Jik Tek to Chung Chuie. The Jik Tek doesn't require hip rotation/torque so it makes for a faster entry. Not only that, it is very natural to touch down with a Chung Chuie after a Jik Tek because your bai jong doesn't need to be altered. I have found this to be a quite economical entry.
