Hello Sifu,

Since you have such an extensive background in several arts, I was wondering if during the time when you were cross-training in so many arts, did you feel that it gave you an advantage in your study of JKD? If so, what aspects helped you and what things to you feel were a detriment or waste of time? Thanks!

Hello Bryan!

The arts that I trained in previous to Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do helped me to REALLY appreciate the simplicity and directness of Jeet Kune Do! It also increased my awareness of structural weaknesses (as well as strengths) in certain arts, and how to better exploit them using JKD attack methods (which is something great to be able to show my students)! I learned about the reasons that Wing Chun Gung Fu forms the structural roots of the Jun an/Jeet Kune Do system, and how important Wing Chun is to anyone who wants to be a more skilled JKD fighter! The time spent training in other arts also made me SURE (without a doubt) that JKD was EXACTLY the art that I wanted to spend the rest of my life training in and teaching to others! I won't ever say that the time was "wasted" as I learned A LOT in the first ten years of my martial arts journey, and was already a skilled fighter when I first started learning Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do!
