good day to all, have recently seen emin boztepe's wing chun and noticed many of his traps are performed differently from other wing chun teachers like randy williams. plus his speed is phenomenal. is his style of wing chun a modified one? sifu what's your opinion on this?
Yes, I agree with you! Emin is a fantastic martial artist! He comes from the Leung Ting Wing Tsun lineage, so his Wing Chun will be slightly different from some of the other prominent Wing Chun instructors. His style is very direct and practical, and comes from him being involved in many real fights and challenge matches. In other words, he knows what works and what doesn't, and sticks to the stuff that really works!

In fact if you trace the lineage back Leung Ting lineage is from Leung Sheung, Yip Mans first Hong Kong Student. Yip Man modified the system over the course of his life time. Some for the better and possibly some it could be argued for the worse. No disrespect meant. Some modifications may have been due to secrecy, student needs or age, we may never know. But yes I agree, Emin appears to be the real deal.

yeah he's the real deal. he's the only wing chun fighters that i know who challenge the gracies for a fight back in the 90's while bjj is still the craze back then via the inside kung fu magazine letters.
Do you know what happened after he challenged them in the 90s, I remember hearing stuff about this but I don't know the exact details as to how this turned out.
Emin wanted to fight Royce at the UFC. Rorion said he had to get in and fight his way up. This was back when they still did it in the 'tournament' setting. Emin didn't want to do that, he wanted to only fight Royce. So they went back and forth about it. Rorion said he could always come to the Gracie Academy if he was so serious about fighting Royce, but Emin had some misgiving's about that. I think it was something akin to "Too much advantage...your dojo" LOL
check it out at sherdog forum. the whole story is in there. even the fax messages of both emin and rorion to each other. its a long thread. in the end rorion is the one who backed out and didn't respond to the messages of emin and the whole thing just died down.
That is exactly what I heard! I didn't think that Emin was the one who backed out, as I have never heard of him refusing a challenge fight! I heard that he wouldn't fight fo the exact reasons listed here ... the Gracies would only do it at their place, and they wanted Emin to have to fight others first! If the truth is known, I think that Emin's reputation as a fierce fighter got to them and they wanted nothing to do with him! You can't lose is you control all elements of the fight! That is what the Gracie's were trying to do! Emin was just ready to stomp someone's butt!

yeah he's really hardcore, but from what i heard from some of my friends who has trained abroad under him, he seems to be a mild mannered and respectful person but when comes to someone challenging him, man its a different story. i remembered once i read at tommy carruthers site; ooops! sorry, anyways someone asked tommy what he thinks of emin he's comment was"REALLLY DANGEROUS MAN". i guess he's reputation in the martial world is real deal.
I would have liked to have seen Emin fight and win against them. I have respect for the Gracies but they seem to sell their style as the best thing since sliced bread and now the US Army Rangers adapted BJJ as their unarmed combat. BJJ may be good against an oppenent in the ring, or when you're facing someone alone and there is nobody that could attack, jump or stab you while you're on the ground (or if you're maybe at the beach where the ground is soft lol).
I think in a no rules fight Emin would have won and that would have killed the hype and the craze that the Gracie family did for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Had Emin beat them, they would have seen how practical a style is that stays on its feet and doesn't restrict itself to rules in a ring.
Bruce Lee could have made ANY art functional, don't forget that. Royce Gracie isn't the top dog of the Gracie Family, it's Rickson. Rorion is about $$ and if there wasn't going to be any, he wasn't interested.
In any event, don't lose sight of the fact that EVERY martial artist that has a school or website sells there program to be the best thing since "sliced bread". And also remember that if you can't fight for much inside a ring, you can't fight for much outside of one either.
Also, the part about the Army adopting BJJ is only partially correct. The person that wrote the program and is the president of it is a BJJ Black Belt under Romero "Jacare" Cavalcante out of Atlanta. He is also very tough at his stand up training. Modern Army Combatives Program, or MACP includes ground, stand-up, and stick fighting as a part of is core curriculum. They go through 4 levels from beginner to advanced and they actually have to fight each other at the third and fourth level before they are considered 'graduated'. Those who want to be instructors have to go to Ft Benning and be certified by the President. They are way ahead of the game when it comes to military hand-to-hand training! I think there is a message there that shouldn't be ignored.
