I was wondering if you could give me a more in depth explanation on something. I would like to have more details on "think hit". I want something more detailed than what I have in my notes right now ("the primary goal of a JKD practitioner is to hit", etc.). I just would like a detailed description so I can make a note of it.
No matter what question is asked of me (if the person is trying to hit me or kick me) I am thinking of hitting them first and then parrying their attack if needed or att he least parrying the attack and hitting them att he same time. I do not think block then hit or block then block again then try and hit; I think HIT. This is the way we are taught in Hardcore JKD. There will or may be times when a parry must happen first but I then immediatley think hit. You may parry or block/obstruct my initial attack but I am still thinking of hitting you when I again immediately attack you. I am sure Sifu can go into more depth and better examples but this is my generic version.
Actually, Kent pretty much nailed it! That is almost word for word what I would have said to you! Good job Kent!

Basically the same thing Kent said, but in slightly different words. I always think of it like this.
If you think about trapping, parrying, or anything other than destroying your opponent, you will be too slow. All of those actions should happen, but automatically as they are trained, without thought. Your focus and thought is always on striking your opponent down. So a parry or trap might occur right before, simultaneously, or right after a strike, but your thought process is all about the strike.

I am in a phase of my teaching cycle that strongly emphasizes this idea. We are focusing on chung choi. Also called chain punching or the straight blast. The beauty of chain punching is in its simplicity and how it embodies the essence of the art. Proper chain punching structure allows you to defend with the punch. You can cut across the opponents punch with your own. You can wedge inside his punch with your own or you can take his punch off line as your matched leads cross. So your punches defend and attack because of your superior position and structure. In some cases you can use the return motion of your punch to perform lop sao. When the punches are joined in rapid succession and are properly in the center you you are thinking hit but simultaniously performing defense and probably trapping. All from simple chain punching. Bruce said into every offensive motion defense is built in, and into every defensive motion is found offense. The key is to keep the punches straight and the elbows down and heavy. I love simplicity

Once again right on the money my friend! We do exactly those things that you mention! The chung chuie is a wonderful tool! It has been my "best friend" many a time in a real fight! And can you believe that there are those who STILL INSIST that Wing Chun isn't important to the JKD structure? All I can say is THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE MISSING!

Personally I teach my students to hit from where they are and if something should get in the way, cut through it with another hit.....If someone feels the need to remove something in their way, well there should be a hit before & after.....The hit should be felt not seen or by the time they felt it...They are aready getting hit again.....Talking about putting someone in the un-comfortable position, LOL

I taught a seminar on trapping this past weekend, covering some of the more "unusual" ways of trapping, and everytime a student asked a "where do I go from here?" question, the answer was always HIT! As the seminar progressed through the hours, I think it became more obvious than ever to all of them that the answer is hitting, hitting and more hitting!

unless you train trapping or removing obstructions all you end up is hit-block-disengage etc... Yes we are taught to hit first and foremost but there may come a time when someone will be able to obstruct the intial hit. We do not think trap then hit. The trap just happens.
