Most schools that I personally encountered that Teach JKD MMA amalgamation, are pulling all stops to get the most students as quickly as possible.

Throw the JKD in with a Bruce Lee poster, you might get the Traditional Martial Arts kid come strolling in, Throw in HARDCORE BJJ MUAY THAI and show someone getting his head pounded in a cage fight, you attract the kids with something to prove.

Moreover the commercials and radio ads are going to be appealing to kids with

A. Alot extra cash (they are expensive over here). B. With Something to prove C. Have short attention spans or busy with school D. in some cases Bruce Lee wannabes (if "JKD" is mentioned)

Now what is interesting, alot of times you get a free trial (Believe me I took advantage of them, hey ANY JKD was better than none AT THE TIME) yet sadly, the focus is more on who can beat who, the technique goes out the window. I mean, I remember sparring and one guy kept chasing me around with wild loopy punches at me (I wish I had that on video)

How does this fit in? Well one guy told me that Bruce threw alot of Haymakers when he fought Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon.


Anyone ELSE WITH FUNNY STORIES?

I could probably fill a book with funny stories of things that have happened since I first started my martial arts training forty years ago! One that stands out in my memory right now is a footwork disaster during class. At the time, I was teaching at a high class fitness facility called Sportslife. I was a trainer there, and I was also in charge of the facility's martial arts program. We were doing some basic footwork drills, specifically the pendulum shuffle, aka slide and step.

There was a guy named Tommy in the class. I had asked Tommy to join the class because he had sort of a bodybuiler's physique and looked like he was in good shape, so I figured that he would be fairly well co-ordinated. Well, nothing could have been further from the truth! When he would shuffle forward and tap his lead foot with the rear during the pendulum, about every third or fourth time he would kick his lead leg out from under himself and fall clumsily on the floor.

There were a lot of people in the class that evening, so the noise was pretty loud when the feet would tap together, and he was on the back row, so no one was really noticing him fall except for me. I could tell it was embarassing for him, and I didn't laugh or anything. Even though it was hard to do so, I kept a straight face. On the fourth time it happened, he slammed his fist onto the aerobics floor and blurted out, "Damn, I did it again! At that point everyone turned and saw him sprawled out on the floor and started laughing. Tommy never came back to class or the facility after that night!
