If you do not know about Masters magazine it is another martial arts magazine that comes out quarterly. It also comes with a free DVD with footage of the people that are featured in the magazine. While watching the lastest DVD I really began to notice how other arts are not "martial" at all. In one scene of an interview a leading juijitsu guy is showing how to reverse/defend against a guilitin choke hold. Both hands were down by the groin and yet he does not strike but goes into very elaborate hand positions and turning the body this way and that. The first thing I asked myself was what did he do wrong and let himself him into this situation. Second why not just strike or grab and crush the "groin". This instructor is actually teaching this for the street. Another showed how to defend against the arm and then the lapel/collar grab. Not one time did he just simply hit. He too did elaborate moves. Another guy was putting down the JKD version of the lim dum tek or rear stamping kick. He said it lacked power and the way he showed it it was more scraping than anything. No thrust to it at all, no exstention and not hip twist to get any power. His version was to cock the leg and then kick at an angle. This would be good for in close fighting at certain angles but he advocated it as if to avoid a punch. I don't think so. I am not saying these guys were not good at what they do but they are not scientific and simple in their arts. After watching them and several of their same art instructors on past DVD's I wonder why JKD is not bigger or more well known than what it is.

The Problem

April 22 2008, 1:15 PM

Hi Kent!

The problem with Jeet Kune Do, as seen by most people, is that we are all too busy with internal squabbles to concentrate on what we should be concentrating on ... seeing that Bruce Lee's art survives for future generations! The Instructors are too busy playing the "I'm right, you're wrong" game and the age old "concepts vs. original" argument. Students are too eaten up with the "my daddy (sifu) can beat your daddy (sifu)" syndrome. Then there is the "kickboxing vs. gung fu" group (aka the "no trapping/sticking vs. pro trapping/sticking" group). The Bruce Lee Estate/Concord Moon LP is too concerned over making money and "who can we file a lawsuit against this week" to concentrate on what they should be doing, which is keeping Bruce Lee's name and art alive regardless of what it takes! In other words, we are eaten up from the inside out with controversy! Am I the only person that sees this? What is it going to take to make people wake up and realize that WE, the actual practitioners of this art, are destroying it from the inside out? We should all be working together, but that will never happen because of the group that thinks "their way is the only way", as opposed to the "we are all a part of the same family" attitude that should be displayed, and displayed honestly! Many cannot take Jun Fan Gung Fu/Jeet Kune Do seriously because of this ongoing controversy!

Yeah man, I agree, the MMA type of stuff is becoming the new TAE KWON DO. The way I see it, let them have it. The bravado will have them hurt or killed at a Club, bar, the hood, trailpark, ghetto, or boosie suburban land where everyone carries a gun.

I wouldn't let it stress you out, I would say as soon as the new Bruce Fanaticism hits with the Chinese Olympics maybe people will see the light. However the truth never was much of a money maker.

Sifu Davis is absolutely correct!

A lot of people from outside the JKD circles think that JKD has turned into one big joke because of all the in-fighting that goes on. You simply can't be of one philosophy (in JKD) without it burning someone else's biscuit.

As far as other folks not being very "martial" in what they do, who knows. Most folks think that what they do is the answer to everything.

However, I wouldn't be too quick to lump MMA fighting and/or fighters in with the TKD bunch. You can't train for MMA without hard sparring and serious dedication. The problem is with schools CLAIMING MMA training but actually don't have a clue.

Case in point. There is a local TKD school here that has a sign in the window for "MMA" and "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu". I met the guy. He knows NOTHING about MMA, BJJ, or CYA...covering his assets! LOL He made some really ridiculous claims and wants to get people in that are interested in that stuff because it's popular. Not caring that he actually knows nothing about it.

But, true MMA gyms and coaches are NOTHING like TKD.
