Centerline

May 23 2008, 10:12 PM

The Centerline, the Self Centerline and the Motherline are all VERY important in Jeet Kune Do! While we do prefer to attack with straight line attacks, sometimes a curved line attack (Oou Chuie, or hook punch) will fit better, based on the position of the opponent. The most important thing is to constantly be aware of the centerline, and attack along the opponent's centerline whenever possible, while defending your own centerline during the process!

Robbie,
Yes, as Sifu explained the center line is of great importance to attack as well as defend as ther are so many vital targets located along it. Another line that is often overlooked is the central axis. This axis could be imagined as a rod that runs from the top of the head down through the center of the body and out to the ground. Any strike or push that is to one side or the other of the central axis will produce a rotational effect on the opponent. However strikes that are directed to the central axis will force the opponent to absorb the full impact of the strike without rotating. Power traps and pressure applied to this axis will produce an uprooting of the opponents posture or stance. Once the opponents has lost his root it is difficult for him to defend or counter strike. This axis can be attacked from any position relative to the opponent.

the flow and body mechanics sometime dictate a curved response as the most logical action. Example 1-2-3 combo or the jab-cross-hook combination; the way that the body torques sets up the curved line hook (#3) naturally and then you can flow from the hook to a back fist and rear cross and so forth.
