Who has picked up and read a book about self defense for women. I picked one up the other day and was surprised. It wasn't the first one that I have read but the material in this book seemed as if it was covering wing chun/JKD. Eye gouges, groin shots, elbows, foot stamps, shin scrapes, hammer fists, even a bong sao defense for a overhand knife attack.
Then I started to think that with all the arts that exist out there why was this book describing attacks/movements that are in wing chun/JKD. Though there were some things this book described that were not some judo throws and rolls. Most of the material looked very similar to wing chun/JKD. But nowhere in the book was wing chun or JKD mentioned.
The main purpose of the book is to educate women to have a chance at getting away from an attacker. In every instance the reader is told to attack until the point where the attacker is distracted and get away. This book assumes the attacker is bigger and stronger than the women being attacked and still it choses it to prepare women against an attacker with very similar tactics to wing chun /JKD.
Why not some other art' tactics? The presentation of the material is for the everyday women ( business, housewife, soccer mom,) not a woman with the interest to become a master but yet is chose these tactics. If this book is giving this information to women (who are for the most part weaker and are not as physically active as most men) so they can survive an attack imagine how it would work for a well conditioned highly skilled practitioner of these strikes.
You might think maybe the author has studied wing chun or JKD and just didn't mention it. Might have? But I don't think S. Margaret Heyden and Allan V. Tarpenning who wrote Personal Defense for Women published in 1970 (same year Bruce Lee was injured and began to write down notes) knew about JKD. The book just wanted to help women defend themselves the best way possible.
I'm not trying to take anything away from Burce or JKD. I want to point out that if women can save themselves with these tactics; What can the well conditioned highly skilled practitioner do with these strikes? And why don't they recommend taking the attackers to the ground? Why didn't they choose attacks from the many other arts which exist? Why do they talk about feints, unbalancing attackers, grip strength, and pivoting. Why do they encourage the usage of umbrellas, nail files, high heeled shoes, hair pins, pencils, and metal rat tail combs.
Simple because in reality it works!
