NOTE: This question was originally asked by Jeff Greene on another thread. I thought it deserved a thread of it's own so I re-posted it here!

Out of curiosity Sifu, what is your view of kicks above belt as it relates to JKD and real altercations? I was sitting here looking at the kicking set poster from Yori and there are quite more kicks than I would think that are above waist level.

For me, I don't like it, but perhaps because my kicks above the waist are not that good. Coming from wing chun, it certainly not emphasized and even in our JKD Concepts, only the gua tek is above the waist and I look at that as more of kick to get the opponents hands down, so it is more toward their guard and not so much of directed at the head. I have seen you execute the nao tek kick effortlessly, but curious how you view it is a weapon in battle? I may have just talked myself into doing a lot of kicking sets when I see you next week, but had to ask. LOL!!

Kicking

June 30 2008, 3:36 PM

Hi Jeff!

The kicking set is designed to develop flexibility and kicking in all directions with minimum preparation. This doesn't mean that you are supposed to kick high in real self defense situations, but instead gives you a goal to shoot for in training. I agree with you that in the street, very seldom would we want to kick above rib/solar plexus height, and most of the time not even that high! The shins, knees, sciatic nerve and groin are all excellent targets, and are all below the waist! For practical self defense, as far as I'm concerned, you just don't need more than that!
