Chelation Therapy for Autism

Welcome! Thank you for visiting the Chelation Therapy for Autism message board. This is a place for support, discussion and friendly debate. This board is designed for those who hold the belief that heavy metal toxicity and/or environmental exposures (ie: mercury/aluminum from vaccination) are the probable cause for regressive autism. This is the main topic of discussion but subject matter is not limited to chelation alone. This message board does not constitute medical advice. Consult your physician for medical advice.

I am the mother of an autistic son. I have been wary of thimerisol for years (not enough years obviously). I also believe that mercury in vaccines can cause autism in some children. A pox on those who allowed poison to be injected into our children!

what to think?

by

We have a son, 19 with autism. We have always felt a connection of his problems with vaccines. How can we find out more about chelation therapy in Louisiana, current doctors. What could that do for him, at his age? He does very well, but, we always hope for more for him.

New here - some advice please........M.....

by

Hello. My name is Pam, mom to Jacob (4) and Lucas & Jessica (2). I have had Lucas in the EIP program and speech therapt since March; not seeing the kind of progress I had hoped for by now & I suspect mild autism. I am going to have him tested beyond the developmental evals we have already had; the twins 2 year appt is in 2 weeks and I want to be armed w/ all the info I can before I talk to his dr.

I guess my main question is, how can I find out, if I can, if his vaccinations have lead to delyed speech/behavior?

I was a HS English teacher before I became a SAHM w/ a master's degree in Education; so I truly feel I have a pragamatic approach to all of this & it's not overly sensitive mothering that is leading me here - have any of you experienced that thought? That other people think you're being 'overly' motherly when it comes to your disabled child??

Thanks for reading.

Pam, Jacob(6/26/00) and Lucas & Jessica (11/4/02)

It's gratifying to talk to a teacher who isn't closeminded about this ASD and the whole area of such.. places I recommend you look for answers are; the National Vaccine Information Center, www.909shot.com and the Autism Research Institute, www.autism.com/ari for info and checklist tests. There are also a list of Dr's who do specialize in this disorder, find them under DAN list on the ARI site. Regards, grandma peg

you're never 'too motherly'

by vickie

Only a mother knows. My son was 9 mos old when i took him in and asked if it was autism. They assured me NO. 2 years later and 20 other diagnosis, and sure enough.....autism...

a mother knows her children. You don't need a phd in anything to know the difference between twins. follow your gut and if your dr. blows you off, find another doctor.

you need one to listen to you!!!

I know what you mean!!

by Jessica

I have a 4 year old boy with Autism and a "normal" 2 year old. She is almost 3 and speaks only a very few words but I am not worried, I know she is just taking her time. My son was 18 months old and non verbal, that was his only symptom of Autism then but I knew something wasen't right. He was happy, no tantrums, lots of eye contact, loves to be held and cuddled, but wasen't talking, everyone thought I was being " too motherly" But you just know when things aren't right, now I have speech therapists and others breathing down my back to put my daughter into some kind of therapy, I know there is nothing wrong. A mother just knows. With my son, I knew, with my daughter I have no worries. She just has nothing to say!!

by

Darcy,

I am doing a project on Chelation therapy for Autism and came across this same product PCA-rx. Did you ever try this? I would like to know also how it worked out for you or anyother person who has tried it.

I came across several options including DMPS, DMSA, EDTA, NDF, PCA-Rx, and Benzonite clay. I would love hearing experiences with any of these products.

Thanks.

Tried it

by

We maybe noticed PCA helped a little, but not that much. So we are looking into trying DMSA and others. Will post more as we learn anything.
We started Authia cream a coupe weeks ago and that seemed to help more than PCA. Its has vit B1 and B12 in it which from my reading around helps increase brain functions.
We have not started yet on the DMSA yet but will try it and post here on how that does.
Anyone with info on DMSA and ALA let me know how and how well it worked please. Thanks.
Oh Check out the new book on Autism "Evidence of Harm" Pretty much proves mercury is the cause.

chelation impact on metal heart device

by

I'm in the earky process of learning about & considering chelation for my 4 y/o daughter with PDD-NOS. One major concern is that she had a device made of nickel, titanium, and polyester (amplatzer.com)placed 1 1/2 years ago to close a hole in her heart. I'm concerned about the impact chelation has on such a device. Does anyone have any resources where I can gather scientific information on the matter?

I just came across a message that you had posted to a forum last year, inquiring about metal implants and the effect of chelating agents on them. I, myself, have been considering oral dmsa and ala chelation, but am concerned because I have a titanium dental implant. I have had all of my amalgam fillings removed as I'm told that they can cause problems with redistribution, but I have been completely unable to gather any information regarding the effects of titanium implants. I couldn't find any links to any other messages in your thread. Did you get any responses? Do you have any information that might help me?

Low Levels of Mercury in Autistic

by

The following article may be very interesting for those of you who believe that high levels of toxic metals may cause autism. I believe studies are still being done to determine if autistic children are sipply unable to excrete the metals. Does anyone here have contradicting evidence? If so, what were the results, and what did chelation do for your children?

"A study of mercury levels in the baby hair of children who were later diagnosed with autism has produced startling results. The babies had far lower levels of mercury in their hair than other infants, leading to speculation that autistic children either do not absorb mercury or, more likely, cannot excrete it."

Reason for In Ability to Excrete Toxic Metals

by

One reason is that chameleon metals like mercury, lead and copper bind to tissue/protein sites in the body that are highest in sulphur. They would need help in letting go of body organs. High thiol group agents like dmsa/dmps/edta are strong enough to pull toxins away from body organs.

However even with chelation with these agents unless something is used that can get past the blood brain barrier once it is less permeable in the second, third, fourth years of childhood, then brain toxicity WILL remain.

Only a few things will help free the brain of toxicity and get the bbb to open up to allow a chelator in/out, or pull toxins out by pressuring the bbb.

There a few ideas for the brave hearted parents who are ready to do this.

Joining Autism Detox on yahoo groups you will be able to find ideas on how to detox the brain, most safely done after the lower body toxic load is freed.

But it IS possible for children to recover and not be lost to autism. Knowing there are poisons trapped is a big key to recovering your child.

No Mercury Autism

by

Yes Adam,
You are right, my son is autistic and I had a murcury test done on him with his hair and there were no signs of mercury at all. It startled me. Then I found out that the mercury is so bonded in the brain it cannot release mercury, so therefore it does not show any. I've heard the best way to have a mercury test is a urine test or stool. And thats if the mercury is in your body. Not your brain.
Hope it was helpful. Sandy

My child has lost an PDD diagnosis

by Anna Gray

Because of a natural medicine doctor and special diets, my daughter has lost a pdd diagnosis. Parents of autistic children are vunerable. I really feel for them. There is so much info and how do you decipher. I feel there are legitimate natural doctors and very close minded conformist main stream medical doctors who follow the lead of special interests or money (pharmaceutical co) and ignore the multitude of parents who are saying there child regressed after the MMR. (Are all these parents wrong? ) Ultimately, parents make the decisions. We know in our gut what is working and what harms. Be skeptical of absolute definite statements. There are no clear cut answers.

Good Luck,
Anna

as if you have any experience looking at toxicity and immune reports of autistic children

All you do is sit around and compile complaints about various subject matter. If we compiled the complaints about so-called modern medicine, we would have enough information to not only fill up one "Quackwatch" website, but dozens, I'm sure.

The research is out there and available for you to review should you choose to review it.

Don't take away hope.

by Jodi Keenan

My children both had severe metabolic and detoxification problems - I dislike chelation immensely and do feel it can be extremely dangerous unless it is done by a doctor that knows what he is doing and keeps on top of the patient constantly to make sure the metals are actually moving out of the body and not just going from one place to another. The kidneys and liver need to be properly functioning to make sure this is happening. To say toxins don't cause autism is not correct. It is definitely one factor. I have a dozen medical tests that show the autism my children HAD was caused by the heavy metal poisonings. I was fortunate to find a doctor who believed in my son and daughter. He healed their systems so the metals can flow out naturally and they are both doing extremely well. My husband and I both had mercury poisoning so both children were infected in vitro. Mercury posioning causes severe metabolic problems which definitely caused my children severe neurological, emotional and physical deficits. You can have your opinion but children are getting better. Unless you are a parent who can not connect with your child you don't have a right to tell anyone anything. I mean no disrespect - but if you are going to tell people that toxins don't cause neurological problems I am going to have to call you on it.

I think that first article says a lot more about the doctor, then the cure

by

I read the doctors note and article posted at the top of this thread. Obviously this guy was a quack, he's been sued and fined for self-medicating, his whole practice was unliscensed. I don't think this one guys greedy motives is a cuase to throw away a promising treatment.

I do agree that I don't believe Autism is caused by a toxic level of mercury in the system. But Chelation therapy, done right, can have huge beneficial effects, not just on children with autism but on almost anyone.

The article above also stated that mercury was the mineral believed to be the source of some of the problems. The research I've found says that it's more likely zinc and copper. And there are trials ongoing into a chelation therapy for alzheimers that could proove promising for children with autism.

Don't discount chelation therapy, just be very cautious and careful what you do and how you proceed. That should be common sense advice for everything though, not just medicatl treatments.

I agree Wes

by

There is something that is causing Autism, seems the only thing Doctors want to say about it is that it isn't there stuff. And putting down what others try when all of us know there are quacks out there. Anyone that doesn;t read and study whats going on is only looking to fall into the hands of a quack that take you for thousands of dollars.
But many people have commented on the good results on using some sort of chelation to rid the body of mercury. As far as I see a parent has no choice but to try it. Finding a doctor that will let you is another thing.

Inaccuracies in your post

by

"Chelation won't help autistic children. Since autism does not have a toxic cause, there's no reason to believe that chelation therapy will help autistic children."

> First, your statement assumes accurate diagnoses of autism. Since ASDs are diagnosed by symptom we have no idea how to prove a patient has been accurately diagnosed as autistic (the symptoms of autism and metal toxicity are quite similar, for example). The explosion of "autistic-like" disorders and the lack of any consistent universal pattern of symptoms seem to indicate that even the medical establishment doesn't know what's really going on. "Autism" seems to be a convenient label these days, the way "senile" used to be.

> Additionally, I know of no research that tells me convlusively that toxicity has ever been ruled out as a cause of autism.

> All this being said, I have seen no proof in the form of conclusive testing or research to support this statement. It hasn't been proven through testing to work, but it also hasn't been proven not to work.

"The sordid stories of two children who received it and wound up suing th prescriber are posted at http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/edelson.html"

> First off, the children aren't suing the prescriber, the parents are.

> Second, what you've cited here are three allegations of fraudulent medical practices against a provider of chelation therapy. You've (falsely) presented this in the context of supporting your statement about chelation not helping autistic kids. The doctor in question appears to be a quack and an opportunist who preyed upon vulnerable parents, lied to them and took their money. Horrible crimes to be sure, but hardly a condemnation of the therapy as a whole, any more than a malpractice suit against a neurologist would serve as an argument against brain surgery.

For the most part, while the parents lose tens of thousands of dollars and a whole lot of hope, the affected children suffered weight loss and the pain of multiple injections. So what you're saying here seems to be, "don't do chelation therapy on your kid because 1) I don't think he has metal toxicity; 2) you'll lose a lot of money; and 3) he'll lose weight." Thanks for the advice.

Transformação impossível da doença do meu filho.

Nos anos 60 e começo dos anos 70, eu gastava meu tempo nas ruas, andando a toa. Meu único foco era ir pra onde a vida me levava sem me preocupar com as conseqüências de meus atos. Eu nunca olhei além do momento.

Eu me sentia sem forças, e como resultado sentia-me deprimida.

Eu joguei o Ritalin no lixo.

Autism

by

Hi Jodi,
I read your column "Don't take away hope" and it right now is giving me hope. I have a son 4yrs old that I can not verbally comunicate with. It is very upsetting. I have been tring everything I can so he will live a normal life. I'm tring clay baths right now. If you can tell me anything I would deeply appreciate it. I would like to know of the doctor you were talking about, I live in New Concord, Ky, and the doctors have not directed me to anyone or anything. I know more than them it seems. If you would please help my son.
Sincerely,
Sandy

natural chelation

by

I was wondering if a doctor recommended NDF or if you got a recommendation from a parent. I'm considering this method for my son but I want to make sure it is safe and I don't want to waste money that I could be spending on his therapy. Please give more details about this product.

Thank You!

Starting chelation soon, some doubts...

by Elizabeth

This is my first post to this board. My son (age 4.5, asperger's) seems to have finally licked the yeast and clostridia, and we're trying to zinc him up prior to starting chelation. I have some doubts about chelation, and I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.

My primary concern is that chelation won't produce any improvements. You see, my son did not have regressive autism. In fact, he had the marks of his present problems, starting with lack of eye contact, noticeably from 2 months of age -- and he was exclusively breastfed (no, I didn't eat a lot of fish or have dental work done), AND has never had antibiotics, AND didn't have vaccinations until later on.

So... Is my son just one of those kids, apparently few in number, that are on the spectrum, but can't blame vaccinations or antibiotics?

Can anyone here tell me they were in this situation and still saw improvements with chelation?

Elizabeth

Take a test first

by

If your doctor hasn't already, have a provocational heavy metal urine challenge. Doctor's Data labs as well as Great Plains Laboratory will run an assay of all elements following a specific DMSA challenge protocol. The decision to have chelation is an easy one if you get to look at a lab report showing high ranges on any specific elements. I could not imagine this course of therapy being prescribed without this data in place to begin with.

Have your son tested!

by

I also did not eat fish nor did I have dental work done during pregnancy. Please don't hesitate to have him tested. Any silver fillings in your mouth could do it. My son also showed signs from the beginning but with each vaccination he did get worse. He had no antibiotics either. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Good luck to you and your little boy. It took a loooong time to figure it all out but my son is a different kid now and will enjoy a normal and productive life. I wish the same for your little boy. Tests are a flim flam

by

So-called "challenge tests" are a cheap parlor trick and don't show anything meaningful.

If I gave you a large cup of coffee (with caffeine) or you had three beers you would urinate more. That is what caffeine do to your kidneys.

Should I then claim you have diabetes since my "challenge test" made you urinate more?

The same applies to giving someone EDTA, DMPS, or DMSA. They will temporarily raise the urine level of mercury or lead (both found in virtually everyone). That is because they bind to the material and force additional excretin beyond normal rates. This will only happen for a short time. Eventually the body will reequilibrate. Several scientific studies by toxicology experts have shown that these compounds do NOT remove heavy metals from "hidden body stores". There are no **hidden stores*. The agents do NOT remove material from the brain or nervous system. Small amounts of new heavy metal get into our bodies daily as these are in the food supply (all foods) since small amounts of heavy metal are in the soil everywhere. The earth's crust is made that way. Our bodies have experienced these for centuries and they are not harmful.

DMPS is illegal in this country. Anyone using it is breaking the law. It is an unapproved drug for good reason. Remember thalidomide? DMPS and many other chelation agents, can cause severe and permanent kidney problems.

Anyone who tries to use DMPS on you or your child and claims it "works" or is "safe" should have no problem signing a notarized letter that they will be fully and personally responsible for any harm caused to the patient, and post a bond to that effect (many chelationists have hidden their assets to make themselves suit-proof; malpractice insurance won't pay for fraud, or illegal drug harm; you will be left high and dry if something bad happens).

Is autism better than imperfect science

by Anna Gray

It is not a perfect science and it is true that know one knows for sure what is going on. I do not think anyone will deny that. A lot of parents and children do not have time to wait for the million dollar studies to prove why something works. Maybe you should be raising money to fund the studies. Autism takes children away from us everyday. Many treatments do improve autistic behavior and no one knows why. If we get our kids back in some way isn't some risk worth it? For a lot of people, the only direction is up.//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Why are you so concerned about chelation that you offer your opinion without any citations from your so called experts? Are you just another tool for the medical industry, which has done nothing to advance the cause?

Dr. Baratz,

So as a corollary of that assinine statement of lunacy, fish do not store and accumulate Mercury either? Too bad your opinion contradicts the preponderance of valid studies and scientific evidence that prove otherwise. If you dont' have anything useful to say, don't say anything at all please.

DMPS chelation

by

I am considering chelating my metal poisoned son with DMPS. Does anyone have detailed information on DMPS or a website that has info on DMPS?
I need DMPS info on:
Does it need a "Carrier" to help it go through the blood brain barrier? If yes, what is the name of the Carrier?
What are the side effects and dangers of DMPS?
Does it go deep into the tissues to pull mercury and other metals out?
Has anyone reading this message had any experiences using DMPS on their autistic child? If so please email me.
Thank you so much

NDF

by Jodi

Please look into using the all natural product NDF instead of dmps. My children had severe issues from dmsa because they had detoxification problems and metabolic issues. The NDF worked wonders and it was less dangerous then dmps and dmsa. If you look up BioRay inc. you will have no problem finding out about it. Good luck to you.

I have had chelation for medal toxicity. And know of
a child that has chelation for autism. It has helped
and if you have a child that has it I would reccommend it highly because the sooner you get rid of it the less problems you will have even later in life.

What about the safety of DMSA ?

by

Question, what about the safety of DMSA ? I have a son who is 5 and we have been using a mild DMSA treatment for 6 months of 1-2 treatments per week, with marked behavour and speech improvment (non-verbal before treatment).

I understand that DMSA removes a number of metals and calcum from your body (including Mercury). Is there a way to counter act the loss of good metals from the body ?

We have replaced our in-home salt with a natural sea salt to add back trace minerals.

We have ensured had had dairy in his diet to add calcum to his bones

He had a good amount of water per day to keep him hydrated as well.

Is there anything else you would suggest?

How about crossing the Blood/Brain barrier ?

I myself (father) have a number of health issues with mostly bleading bowwls (lower colon), stabbing colon pain, ongoing gas, very poor digestion, etc..., as well as a never clear enough brain).

After research for my some regarding mercury, put myself on DMSA for about 4 months, removed a almagam filling, did some more DMSA and my lower colon has virtually been cured of all its problems ! As well as clarity of my brain (I am well educated) has gone through the roof.

My question is, even with the marked improvement in my son's and my life, is DMSA safe ? and are there additions we could make to DMSA celation that makes it much safer.

Thank you in advance for any professional advice.

DMPS cream

by

My 3 1/2 year old son has autism and our DAN physician has recommended starting DMPS cream. I am also wondering about the safety and other peoples experiences with it. My DAN physician says he prescribes it over DMSA because it doesn't has the negative effects on the gut that DMSA does. I'm concerned because of the things I've read on the DMPS backfire website. However, I want to use it if it seems to be safe and effective. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with DMPS? I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

DMPS

by Nursing with DMPS

I work in a clinic that uses DMPS transdermal cream and we are having wonderful results. The only side effects we have is a rash once in awhile, but the results are great. We are having children making eye contact that have never done so before, talking in fashions that one can understand and respond back to. It is so heartwarming to see these children come out of a shell and become a child that lives in this world.
You should feel very comfortable in using this medication under the supervision of a physician. Make sure they keep close check on your childs blood work to monitor their kidney and lover functions due to the face that toxins are removed mostly through the kidneys and liver.
GOOD LUCK.

Dmpsbackfire.com

by

OK That site is by adults and it all pertains to instances of DMPS being administered by Dentists (when it was once available to dentists) and they shot it into people that still had amalgams. They had minor problems with amalgams leaking and the dentists were in a study about the DMPS's effectiveness in extracting metals and mercury, and they simply injected people who still had their amalgams. DMPS appeared in their saliva, pulled the mercury out of the amalgam (a testament to the power of DMPS's ability to pull mercury BTW) and it ended up getting injested and scattered into their whole body because of the quantity that was pulled. Far greater than what will get pulled in a year under normal situations. BTW those that claim DMPS or other chelation isn't good at pulling mercury show that site as the flagship of their point. It clearly emphasises the exact opposite. DMPSbackfire is a shining example of how something with tremendous power can do tremendous harm in the hands of the clueless. Ergo - get a DAN doc or someone who is good at toxicology and stay conservative, cos with great power comes great responsibility.
Cool.

DMSA Dosage

by cathy

My sons's doctor has started him on DMSA 250mg by mouth one every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Alot of postings I've read suggest that DMSA should be given every 3-4 hours for 3 days, then rest for 3 days, and start up again with that dosage. Does anyone else give DMSA like we are? We are seeing wonderful results slowly buy surely. I'm thinking that my doctor wants to take it slowly for safety's sake. Any info is appreciated.

dmsa or dmps

Hello Mary,
I too am trying to decide what to chelate with. I was wondering if you would educate me about the info you have acquired on DMPS chelation. I am "in the dark" as to detailed info on DMPS. Any info you have on DMPS would be gratefully appreciated. I'm sorry to report that I've never heard of PCA-Rx oral chelation. However, be careful about alternative or homeopathic chelators because some are still in the clinical trial stages and side effects are unknown, also they want you to sign a liability release form so that the representative of the chelator will NOT be responsible for any negative or disasterous health effects that could occur when taking unknown chelators.

Yes, you are on the right track with the heavy metals that are causing many of todays maladies and degenerative diseases. I have found the best means of removal of these toxic metals. There is an overview of this information about toxic metals at: http://www.advancedhealthplan.com/toxicmetals.html

This provides a list of what metals are causing what symptoms. You may also be interested in the amount of heavy metal that is being given to our children by way of vaccinations. Are they safe? You be the judge.
